23.05.08 - Swans visit the Knights in Round six
The Swans head to Nash Field on Saturday in round six of the Football West Premier Division to take on Western Knights (3pm) and hope for their first victory on the road.
The Swans have opened the season well, although they have played three of the opening five rounds at home, and their only defeat came on their only road trip at ECU. Black and whites Coach Paul Lincoln hopes to turn that around on Saturday. “It’s a real test for us as we are away from home and the Knights are coming off a good performance against Morley last week,” said Lincoln.
“I’m confident that we will perform well and we will be looking to secure three points on our travels, we can’t keep getting results at Francis Street if we can’t win on the road. If we let it keep going it will get into the players heads so the sooner we get the monkey of our backs the better,” added Lincoln.
The Coach hopes to have Paul Baczynski (left) and Damien Catalano available after missing the opening month of football, while John Mansaray and Robert Monterosso will have late fitness test’s on their injuries. Aaron Cole has lead by example this season; the skipper has been a tower of strength at the back along with youngster David McNally. Cory Hugo (right) has also been in a rich vein of form in goal and he knows he will be in for a busy time on Saturday.
It’s been a difficult start to the season for the Western Knights but they won convincingly last week in the cup against first division side Morley Windmills. But their league form has been indifferent and Ronnie Campbell will hope to remedy this on Saturday. Striker Rory Grant has hit a purple patch in front of goal and along with exciting teenager Anthony Skorich, but it’s at the back were they have been struggling conceding 14 goals in their five games and key defender Jonathan Mathers will hope for a big game against his former club.

McNally stands tall at the Swans
A good start to the season for the Black and whites has been great for everyone at Francis Street and the form of youngster David McNally has been a huge positive for the club and he has formed a great partnership with skipper Aaron Cole. The tall defender is enjoying his football at the moment, and the clubs start to 2008. “It's been a really good start for us this year. Everyone has worked hard over pre-season to get themselves fit and it is really showing in our performance so far this season.
“Everyone in the squad wants to make the starting eleven and is fighting for their position on the park. All the boys take training seriously which helps everyone to get focused for every game.
“All games in this league are tough but I think that we are up to the challenge. Hopefully we can keep getting results and work our way to top end of the table,” said McNally.
The Curtin university student who is studying commerce, majoring in marketing and management found it difficult last season but has been an ever present in the side this season. “I’ve learnt heaps this season it has been great playing alongside Coley this year.
“He is a great leader on and off the pitch and I think that everyone in the team looks up to him. So far this season I think that he has been our best player because he consistently performs well every week,” explained McNally.
The youngster was invited for state trials by the club but missed the first session due to injury, but has been overlooked for the team this year. “Unfortunately the state coach contacted the club and told them I was not required for the team.
“I’m disappointed because I didn't get a chance to try out but there is always next year,” commented the defender.
With new coach Paul Lincoln in charge this season McNally believes he is doing a great job and encourages all players on their game. “I think Linc's has done a great job as first team coach this season. Over pre-season he concentrated on getting everyone fit before anything else.
“I think this has helped the team because when you are fit your whole game improves. He has also introduced a number of youngsters to the first team this season, such as myself, Michael Tronchin, Geoff Mason, Alex Cocking and John Mansaray. This is an encouraging sign for the future of Swan. I think our good start to the season is because of Linc's hard work and planning,” explained McNally.
The Swans travel to the Knights on Saturday and the big defender is looking for an away victory. “A win would be great away from home and think we can get a result if we are focused and keep our shape.
“Three points would be handy this week to keep us in the top half of the table. The game will give us the chance to prove that not only can we perform at Francis Street but also in our away games. The Knights are good up front so our backline will have to be on their toes. Apparently their backline is their weakness so hopefully our strikers can take advantage,” said McNally.
The defender is set to travel overseas with his family for a holiday in June, and he will be trying his luck while he is away fitting in trials at clubs in the UK. “Yes the club has organised for me to try out for a few teams in England while I am over in the UK.
“I don't really know what to expect but I guess I can only try my best and see what happens. Hopefully things will work out but it will be a good experience none the less. I have to thank Pete for helping to make this happen, I want let him down,” said McNally. |
16.05.08 - Scali a big plus for Swans
Swan IC veteran striker Damian Scali has began the season on fire scoring five goals in the opening five rounds. After the draw with Mandurah City on Saturday Scali was happy with the way the black and whites had opened the season. “It’s been a great start, we set a target of five points in three games and got seven so we are very happy with that.
“The game against Joondalup was disappointing, from a form point of view I thought we were ordinary, yet only just got beat, that can only be a good sign. Things just did not happen for us, they took the initiative and we did not respond. We now have to keep the momentum going as the season can change very, very quickly and we need to get as many points now while were in some form as we can,” said Scali.
The contribution of Scali has been tremendous this season, and after an injury plagued pre season he is looking forward to the rest of 2008. “I hope to be able to contribute to the team by just making sure I always make correct decisions out on the park, don’t make mistakes and talk the younger players through the game.
“I have been playing up front this year in most games, hopefully taking the physical focus of opposition teams off Alex Cocking, David Perich, Johnny Mansaray and Geoff Mason so they can play the football they are capable of.
“Its great, I have young guys buzzing all around me and if I can get them into the game I feel I am contributing. The body is doing OK, considering I did not do a pre-season due to travel then injury, I’m getting closer to match fitness with every week,” explained Scali.
The club struggled last season but under new Coach Paul Lincoln they have started 2008 more positive. Scali said: “Lincs has been great, I guess the difference is he has a different sort of passion for the game. Training is very similar, so is team selection. The biggest difference is we have a much younger and passionate team this year. Everyone playing wants to play for Swan, which makes a huge difference.”
The club have played a number of youngsters this season and Scali believes it’s great for the club in the long run. “Other than me at 32 the rest of them have an average age of about 20, that is sensational and to be honest I wish I had this amount of young guns with me at the club when I was 20.
“David McNally was identified by club supporters when in the under 18’s a couple of years ago and now he is starting to really dominate for us. The fantastic thing is he is not over-confident about it all and has a realistic view about his progress. Unfortunately, we have had other kids like him get too far ahead of themselves, develop a poor attitude towards playing and now have quit the game,” explained Scali.
Swans coach Lincoln is delighted with Scali’s contributions this season to date. “Damien is crucial for the success of the team, he can play anywhere on the park and his experience is so valuable for the young players around him. He is averaging a goal a game so that tells you how important he is to the team,” said Lincoln.
Many pundits believed the loss of David Foster was going to be the Swans downfall this season but Scali believes the young lads coming through will do the job. “The loss of Fosy was huge, he did win two fairest and bests at our club.
“I hope he goes well at Floreat, he deserves to as he was excellent for us. We have and always will score enough goals to win games. We have many attacking options and young Alex Cocking has been a breath of fresh air.
“This year is going get harder and harder for him as it is his first year and a long season. With Geoff Mason and Tommy Shepheard thrown in there, our goal scoring options is not going to be an issue. Although, if we are relying on John Mansaray scoring, we may have issues,” joked Scali. |
Swans players invited to State trails
The re-formation of the WA state team has been a long time coming but last week players were invited to try out for selection and three members of the Swans squad were invited. Skipper Aaron Cole (right), and fellow defender David McNally along with midfielder David Perich attended Coach Robbie Dunn’s first selection trail.
Swans Coach Paul Lincoln has been delighted with the trio’s performances this season. “Coley has been a pillar of strength at the back for us this season. He’s led the team by example and the young players in the side look up to him and as skipper he has been fantastic,” said Lincoln.
“Along side him has been Davey Mac, the youngster has come on leaps and bounds this season, and he and Coley have formed a great partnership at the heart of our defence. He shows great maturity for a player so young and he can only get better.
“Perich (right)has been great in midfield for me this season. His energy and good passing ability has made him an important cog in the Swans set up, and he has shown he can match it with the best in the league,” said Lincoln.
Unfortunately Cole and McNally had to pull out of the trials through injury, but we wish all three good luck in future weeks.
On Wednesday’s trial Dunn was happy "Last nights session went well, it was good to see quality players pitted against each other and observe how they reacted to a number of situations," said Dunn, who's anticipating a busy year. "Football West are also looking at other games so there could be quite a lot of activity for the State side coming up over the next twelve months.
Dunn was happy with the application shown by the player group during their first session together. "I was really impressed by how they responded when I asked them to do something," he said. "With regard to our planned launch match at the end of June, which will see us take on a strong international team, time is against us, so it's very important that I have players who are willing to follow instructions. From what I saw last night I believe Western Australian will acquit themselves well against what will be tough opposition."
The process of bringing together the first State squad in close to five years has seen Dunn cast his net far and wide. "It's important that I consider as many players as I can for the squad and last night gave me the opportunity to see a few more players in action," explained Dunn. "The majority of the players are from the Premier League but we also had some players attend from outside that competition, players that are very good and who I wanted to make sure could step up, and they showed that they can."
While still in the planning stage, it's hoped the State team will meet Perth Glory later in the year. "Negotiations are underway for us to play two games against Glory as way of showcasing the quality that exists in the State League. It'll also give us a good gauge on where the WA boys are in relation to the A-League," said Dunn. "It was great to see Dave Mitchell watching last night's session, he's a big advocate of the local players so he'll see first hand what some of the boys can do when and if these games eventuate."
Invited to Wednesday's training session were Daryl Platten (Armadale), Ken Lafitz (Balcatta), Paul Harvey (Canning City), Scott Blackmore, John Higgins, Ian McMurray (E.C.U. Joondalup), Garin Collins, Rafeal Insurralde, John Migas (Floreat Athena), Jason Barrera, Callum Roberts (Fremantle Spirit), Jeff Bright, Andy Brown, Keith Brown (Mandurah City), Matt Danskin, Gianfranco Circati, Todd Howarth, Michael Icanovski, Andreas Oliviera, Greg Sharland (Perth S.C.), Scott Bulloch, Shaun Kilkelly, Steve MacDonald, Scott Neville, Neil Young (Sorrento), Marc Anthony, Phil Arnold, Dean Evans, Mark Redshaw, Phil Straker (Stirling Lions), Aaron Cole, David McNally, David Perich (Swan I.C.) and Luka Jukic (Western Knights). |
23’s beat Knights in midweek game
Swan IC 4 - Knights 0
Swan IC under 23’s ran out 4-0 winners in Wednesday nights league encounter with Western Knights, on target for Mick Da Re’s young side were John Monterosso, Matt Webb, Shane Webb and Jake Da Re.
Swans senior Coach Paul Lincoln was happy with the team’s performance. “ The game didn’t reach any great heights and with better finishing the result would have been far greater.
“Shane Webb was man of the match, he worked up and down in the midfield and his efforts were rewarded with a goal.
“It was good for the club that Damien Catalano (right), Paul Bazcynski, John Monterosso and Robert Monterosso (60 Mins) all got through the game which is good news,” said Lincoln. |

09.05.08 - Swans look to bounce back in Round five
The Swans will look to bounce back after last weeks 2-3 loss at ECU Joondalup when they entertain Mandurah City at Francis Street (3pm) The game is the Football West ‘Match of the week’ as the third placed black and whites take on second placed Mandurah City
Swans coach Paul Lincoln is hoping to continue their excellent home form on Saturday. “The 4 - 0 win against Perth was a terrific result and we had a lot of confidence going into the game against Joondalup but unfortunately we started poorly and were down 3-0 after 40 minutes. We battled the game out and won the second half,” said Lincoln.
Saturday is a big game for the Swans and the Coach believes City will be a tough opponent. “Mandurah are second on the ladder, and are coming off a convincing win against the Knights. They will be a difficult opponent and we will need to show the same desire and work rate we have in our previous home games to retain our good start at home,” added Lincoln.
Swans back line had been in good form but last week conceded three at ECU. Youngster David McNally (right) has been in outstanding form alongside the experienced Aaron Cole, and they will need to be on their toes against a confident Mandurah side. The Swans young guns in the forward line, Alex Cocking and Football West’s 2006 young player of the year Geoff Mason will look to give the home side the edge in the big clash.
Stuart Currie’s newly promoted side have performed well over many people expectations in the opening four rounds and go into Saturday’s clash in confident mood after a stunning 5-1 away victory at Western Knights last week.
Currie is delighted with his sides’ progress this season.”Yes we’ve had a good start, and this is what I’ve explained to the boys. We’re riding the wave at the moment, and sooner or later it going to hit the beach and it will come to an end, so we just have to take it one game at a time,” said Currie.
“We’ve assembled a good squad of players at the club, and were playing some good football at the moment it helps with the experience players we’ve brought in this season, we hope to continue this on Saturday at Swan,” explained the Mandurah coach.
On the game at Francis Street, Currie is looking forward to the game, and hopes to end his poor win, loss ratio at the Middle Swan club. “It’s always a hard place to go and get a result, in fact I don’t think I’ve ever got one their in my Coaching career, but hopefully that can change this week,” explained Currie.
A strong midfield has given Mandurah the edge this season with Andy Brown and Ryan Townsend outstanding. Shane Crampton is getting back to his best and came of the bench last week and scored and he will hope for a start this week, but with the form of Phil O’Callaghan he may have to wait his turn. |

02.05.08 - Swan on the Road for the first time this season
The Black and whites hit the road for the first time in 2008 when they travel north for the Football West Premier Division clash against E.C.U. Joondalup at the ECU University Arena (3pm)
It’s been a dream start to the season for Paul Lincoln’s side and he hopes his side can continue their good form. “ A dream start indeed, we have exceeded our expectations and it’s a credit to the players, we have focused on making Francis Street difficult for opposition teams and to date we have had success,” said Lincoln.
The side struggled last season in defence, and goals against was the second worst in the league, but in the opening three games the backline has been solid. “The pundits out there may have looked at last season when the team conceded 61 goals. We have worked hard on improving defensively as a team this season. The back four has been settled and with Cory Hugo in good form, teams have found it difficult to score,” added Lincoln.
On the trip to Joondalup on the weekend Lincoln believes it will be tough game. “They are coming off their first loss of the season and will want to rectify that at home. Every game is tough in this league and we expect a tough physical game on Saturday. We are away from home so it’s a big test for us and they have players like Ian McMurray and Darren Broxton that can change a game so we need to be mindful of them,” commented Lincoln.
In team news Thomas Shepheard is still unavailable through injury and Paul Bazcynski and Michael Tronchin face late fitness tests.
Willie McNally has the Northern suburbs club playing some good football and skipper Ian McMurray is leading by example. The defence has been solid with Scott Blackmore and Craig Simpson outstanding in the first three rounds, but the midfield of Scott Bushby, Darren Broxton and Tommy Amphlett will make it hard for the Swans.
Get along and support the Black and Whites on Saturday at the ECU University Arena, Gary’s under 18’s kick of at 11am, Mick’s under 23’s 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions, under 15’s are admitted free. |
Cocking Enjoying life at Francis Street
The departure of David Foster in the close-season to Floreat Athena meant the Swan IC were a little light in the striker department, and new Coach Paul Lincoln tried hard to sign a striker for the new season. He found it difficult and the former Inglewood United and Stirling Macedonia striker couldn’t believe his luck when young 17-year-old striker Alex Cocking turned up for the start of pre-season training.
Alex Cocking performed well in the pre-season tests and topped the clubs beep test scores and Lincoln is happy with his progress.
“Alex is a terrific kid, he his very mature and has a lot of potential. He has a lot to learn about playing at this level and his willingness to learn will help fast track his progress. He knows how to score goals and that’s the key ingredient for any good striker,” said Lincoln.

Above: Cocking is tightly marked by Perth SC's Brendan Ross and Gianfranco Circati last week.
The young striker is enjoying life at Francis Street, and hopes it continues. “I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club and they have really made me welcome. I love the club it’s not filled with politics like other clubs in the league the boys are only interested in one thing and that’s playing football. I think I’ve done OK this season and we’ve started well but its early day’s we just have to take one game at a time,” said Cocking.
The youngster made his league debut on the opening day of the season against Cockburn City and he scored the opener in a 3-1 victory for the black and whites, something he will never forget.
“It’s always a great feeling to score but scoring my first league goal for the club and the season on my debut made it that much better. The boys are playing really well and that gave us confidence for the rest of the season and we’ve carried on with it in our first three games.
“It’s great for me and it’s the best feeling to walk off the Francis Street pitch on a Saturday with a win under our belt and hopefully for me, a few more goals,” added Cocking.
The local lad started his football career at the Swan Districts club and moved on to Inglewood United in under 12’s and 13’s, before moving on to Perth S.C 14’s and 15’s with his school mates from Trinity College. He then played two years for his college before returning to the Swan Valley with the Swans.
He’s now played thee league games and has been marked by Cockburn City’s Liam Lilly (Australian Schoolboy's player) and former Glory player’s Ante Kovacevic, Floreat Athena and Gianfranco Circati. Perth SC. He has made life difficult for all of them and he say’s it a great thrill to play on such good players.
“It was a big step up from school yard football to the state Premier League, but it was awesome playing against them, and the best feeling was going head to head with them and sometimes coming out on top,” explained Cocking.
The club have shown faith in a number of youngsters this season and Cocking believes it’s good for the future of the club. “The young players of the club need that experience in the 1st team because they will one day lead the club. All the lads in the team like Dave McNally, Michael Tronchin and John Mansaray, are all quality players that bring something different to the table that the team can use.
“The experienced players like Damian Scali and Cory Hugo have helped me and the other young players heaps since I’ve been at the club but saying that all the boys in the squad have been there to help me out at some time or another,” commented Cocking.
He added: “Another guy to help me heaps is Coach Paul Lincoln. He's a top bloke and quality coach, it’s good for me because back in his day Paul was a quality striker and he’s given me very useful knowledge that I can use. He’s given me a lot of responsibility and I won’t let him down,” added Cocking.
It’s been a long road for the striker and his farther Barry has been their all the way and Cocking is very grateful to him.
“Dad’s been to every game so far, and he always there to tell me to pull my head in or if I’m playing rubbish, or pick me up or take me to training.
“But he’s been the one person who’s been there from the start and I wouldn’t have got where I am so far if he wasn’t involved,” explained Cocking. |
25.04.08 - Swans Host Perth in Italian derby
The ‘Spring in the Valley’ cup is up for grabs when the Swans host Perth Sc at Francis Street on Saturday (3pm).
It’s a traditional Italian derby between the two sides and with both undefeated so far this season it should be an entertaining encounter.
The Swans were many pundits choice of relegation candidates but have begun the season well with a win and a draw. But Coach Paul Lincoln has shown faith in a number of youngster, the likes of John Mansaray and Michael Tronchin, but the experienced of former Perth defender Aaron Cole and keeper Cory Hugo will be vital in Saturday’s clash.
Lincoln was delighted with last weeks draw against Floreat Athena, and he hopes they can continue on against a strong Perth line up. “Floreat are a good side and we defended really well. It’s been a big criticism of our club that we can’t defended, we showed we could last week,” said Lincoln.
“But saying that we probably had the best chances to win the game but the overall team performances was very pleasing,” added Lincoln.
On Saturday’s game Lincoln hopes his side can give a good account of themselves. “This weekend we face the night series champions Perth, who are coming off a good win against Mandurah. They are a terrific team who have some outstanding players so we know we have to be at our absolute best to take three points. I’m confident that our form will continue and we should have an entertaining game,” commented Lincoln.
Perth sits in second spot on the table on goal difference and will look to repeat their 3-1 victory last time they visited the Swan Valley. David Onoforo has made an excellent return to Dorrien Gardens and along with Andreas Oliveira will keep the Swans defence on their toes, while Robbie Puca, Andrea Jukic and Antonio Naglieri will look to dominate in the middle of the park.
Get along and support the Black and Whites. on Saturday, Gary’s under 18’s kick of at 11am, Mick’s under 23’s 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions, under 15’s are admitted free. |
Mansaray star’s in Swans engine room
When a young Sierra Leone lad turn up to try out in the under 18’s in 2005 no one would have thought he would play in the Swan IC first team four years later.

But that’s just what has happened to midfielder John Mansaray, the youngster showed talent in the under 18’s but many believed he didn’t have the right attitude to play first team football, but how wrong they were.
A visit to E.C.U. Joondalup that season showed the potential the lad had when he single handedly earned a point for a young 18’s side against the top team in the league.
Mansaray was man of the match in the sides 3-1 against Cockburn City in the opening game of this season and followed it up with a great game against Floreat Athena, and he’s really enjoying his football at Francis Street.
“I’m really enjoying it at the moment it’s a great experience playing first team football and I hope it continues,” said Mansaray.
Speaking after the Swans 0-0 draw with Floreat Athena the midfielder thought they could have nicked all three points on the day.
“We had a number of chances, my self included, and we should have put them away. But today it wasn’t our day and next week we have the opportunity to bounce back in a big game against Perth at home.
“We’ve showed we can match teams in the league and it will be a time to step up next week against a very strong Perth team,” commented the midfielder.
The 21-year-old has completed his first pre-season at the club which has helped in his fitness and this has given him the encouragement to press for a regular first team spot. His energy and pace has given the Swans midfield a new lease on life, along side fellow youngster David Perich.
“It’s my first pre-season with the club and I’m now seeing the benefit. I’ve formed a good midfield partnership with David and we sort of complement each other which all goes well for the season,” added Mansaray.
Swans Coach Paul Lincoln believes the midfielder has a lot to over the club for a number of years. “John has started well this season and it’s all down to his hard pre-season. He’s a lot fitter and he’s not missed any training sessions which he was doing before,” said Lincoln.
“The boy can play and you don’t win the 2007 under 23’s Football West player of the year if you can’t. He’s adapted well to first team football and I hope he continues on with his progress,” added Lincoln. |
Ando gives Swans a lift
Swan IC began 2008 with games against three of last season’s top four sides, and many believed the club would start with three defeats. A round one 3-1 victory against Cockburn City, was followed by a scoreless draw with champions Floreat Athena. In the draw against Athena defender Dom Ando played a man of the match performance, to keep the score at 0-0.
He was pleased with the whole team performance on the day. “ It was a great performance from all of us, and we were a bit unlucky not to sneak in the win however. Floreat are a strong side, probably the best in the league, and obviously very keen to win after a loss the week before,” said Ando.
Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was delighted with Ando’s performance especially in the second half when Athena went looking for the goal to win it. “I thought Dom was excellent today he made some crucial tackles on Branimir in the second half, which was vital. He’s been flying in the last couple of weeks in training and match day, it’s great to have him back fully fit and a player of such experience in our young side,” said Lincoln.
The defender has fought back from a serious knee injury and has won his place on merit and he believes all the hard work is now paying off. “I’ve tried to keep fit and do the right a thing during the lay off, which was really frustrating as you always want to play the game. Now the knee doesn't worry me one bit, it actually feels stronger than what it used to be,” explained Ando.
With new Coach Lincoln at the helm this season Ando believes the club will surprise a few teams this season. “I've known Linc's for a long time and played against him in the past.
“He has great passion for the game and it seems to be rubbing off on all of us. The vibe at training is very good, we all put in 100% and seem to be gelling well as a team,” said the defender.
He added: “The youngsters who are coming through the ranks have all proven they are good enough to play in this league. If you look over the last three years, the team in general hasn't changed much.
“The players have played together for a while and have an understanding amongst each other. This is our biggest advantage we have over other teams and you'll find all teams would struggle beating us.
“It’s still early in the season and I know there is still a long way to go this season, but we hope we'll prove these so called pundits wrong.” |
18.04.08 - Swans face Champions in Round two
Swan IC host the 2007 Football West Premier League Champions Floreat Athena at Francis Street tomorrow in round two of the competition (3pm)
The black and whites will have to do without influential striker Thomas Shepheard for the big game, as he hasn’t recovered from his foot Injury.
But Coach Paul Lincoln will welcome back defender Paul Baczynski (left) and striker Damien Catalano back from injury for the visit of Michael Roki’s side.
Lincoln hopes to continue on with the sort of performance that gave his side a 3-1 win in round one against Cockburn City.
He said: “Last week’s win against Cockburn was just what we needed and I was really pleased with the performance and everyone played there part and I had a difficult time selecting the best three players.”
“This weekend we face last season’s champions who are coming off a shock defeat last week to Mandurah. They are a very good side so we know that they will be looking to bounce back with a win.
“We go in full of confidence and we hope to continue our form from last week so we should have an entertaining game,” added Lincoln.
Athena arrives at Francis Street after suffering their first league defeat in 23 rounds in the opening round away to newly promoted Mandurah City. Michael Roki’s side went through last season undefeated so he will be looking for his side to bounce back.
Change has been kept to a minimum with 2004 Golden Boot winner and former Francis Street favourite David Foster and utility Dean Apelgren brought in to replace Boima Karpeh and Josip Magdic, who have moved on to greener pastures.
Otherwise, the championship winning side remains intact with national league veteran Ante Kovacevic forming an imposing defensive line alongside rising stars John Migas and Julian Madaschi and goalkeeper Vas Vujacic. Branimir Mikulic, Argentine import Rafael Insurralde, Garin Collins and Adam Bachillor provide the momentum going forward with Foster the target man in the final third. With a squad brimming with not only talent but also confidence, Floreat are expected to challenge Perth for top honours.
It’s a return today for three old black and whites, David Foster, Miki Vujacic and Jovo Pavlovic, we hope you enjoy your return, but not too much!!!!

01.04.08 - Perich shines for the Swans
Swan IC failed to reach the semi-final stages of the 2008 McInerney Ford Night Series but there were some encouraging performances from new Coach Paul Lincoln’s side.
A standout in the last two games, which ended in draws against semi-finalists Perth SC (2-2) and Stirling Lions (0-0), was midfielder David Perich. Both the opposition sides had quality midfields but the Francis Street youngster showed why he has cemented a spot in the middle of the black and whites central midfield.
He was happy with his performances and that of the team. He said: “I was happy the way I finished the night series, but I’d like to forget the ECU game. I think it’s just more of a continuation and consistency of my form of late last year, and not getting unfit during off season like previous years. It made pre-season not such a necessity, but more of conditioning thing.”
“The team performed better than I expected it would. We played with a fairly different squad compared to any time last year and I thought it might take longer to gel together.
“We really outplayed the Knights, but more importantly responded well after a poor match against E.C.U with draws against two really good teams. Both matches we could have easily won,” added Perich.
With Lincoln in charge at the Francis Street club a number of his under 23’s team from last season are pushing for first team spot’s this season and Perich believes it bodes well for the season ahead.
“Linc’s has been really good, he hasn’t been afraid to try new things when game plans hasn’t been working and has been giving the young players a lot of time on the pitch and therefore experience for the season to come,” said the 20 year-old.
“It is promising; the likes of John Mansaray, Dejan Djukanovic and Michael Tronchin, also the new young lad Alex Cocking have performed well in the night series. It looks good for the season, any added depth is always good and when it comes from up and coming players it good not only for this season but obviously for years to come,” added Perich.
The club also has the experienced players in the squad, Aaron Cole at the back, Damian Scali in midfield and Thomas Shepheard up front and Perich, who has just signed a new contract at the club, believes the black and whites will surprise a few teams this season.
“I believe our best 11 can challenge any team in the competition and we have shown in the past that when we step up we can challenge the likes of Perth, Floreat and the other “top” teams.
“Problem is injuries and suspensions which we always struggle with, so perhaps with a little luck top four could happen but I would say it’s our goal as a football club for the next few seasons,” commented Perich.
Swan’s Coach Lincoln has been happy with Perich’s contributions and hopes he continues on with it into the new season. “David was a standout for us in the night series, and he looks set to have a big season. He has worked hard over the pre-season and his hard work is being rewarded.
“David forms part of our leadership group, and it’s a credit to him at his age that he has adapted so well to his new role. David is a very important player for the club and we haven't seen the best of him yet,” commented Lincoln. |
Lincoln pleased with his team’s response
A week after a 5-1 thrashing against ECU Joondalup the Swans bounced back with a solid performance against group B leaders Perth SC, 2-2, in the fourth round of the McInerney Ford Night Series. Coach Paul Lincoln (right) had to tell a few home truths at training in the week after the loss to ECU but he was pleased with the way his team responded.
He said: “The performance of the team was very good; to play Perth on their ground and to have almost taken the three points is a credit to the players. “I questioned the experienced players last week and for them to respond the way they did was excellent.“We can’t get carried away with anything, we are still only in pre-season but the signs are encouraging.”
The decision to bring back former state keeper Cory Hugo into the starting line gave the side the experience in the big game and Lincoln was pleased with his contribution. “We made the decision to bring in Cory after Daniel Agudelo lacked a little confidence against ECU,” explained Lincoln.“The lad has a bright future ahead of him but we thought Cory would be stronger against a talented Perth outfit. I spoke to Daniel and explained my reasons and he accepted it.“I thought Cory played really well; he made some great saves at important times in the game and was outstanding. I expect that as his fitness improves he will even get better,” added Lincoln.
There was another solid performance from David Perich in the middle of the park. The likes of Robbie Puca, Antonio Naglieri and Peter Lord in the Perth midfield meant Perich was kept on his toes, but Lincoln was delighted with his nights work, especially after a poor game against ECU.“I thought David got better as the game went on and he would admit that his game against Joondalup was one he would rather forget. “He showed that he can match it with some very good players and we hope he continues with his improvement for the rest of the season,” commented Lincoln.
Lincoln made six changes to the side that lost heavily against ECU and two who played well were youngster Michael Tronchin and big defender Paul Baczynski which delighted the new coach.Lincoln said: “Michael played his first game after overcoming back soreness. His main task was to keep Todd Howarth out of the game, and being his first game for the year I thought he did extremely well.” Lincoln added: “Paul was excellent at the back along with Aaron Cole and it gives me a few headaches when selection night comes around, because David McNally has also played well in the night series.
“I thought we kept to our game plan really well and it was a little unfortunate for Dejan Djukanovic whose mistake led to their equaliser. He had played well all night but they capitalised on the mistake and scored, but overall I was pleased with the whole team.” |
