23.10.08 - Testimonial a perfect end for Hugo

The football career of Swan IC’s long serving defender Justin Hugo came to an end on Sunday when the 32-year-old was given a testimonial game at Francis Street with a number of the former black and whites returning to send him off in style.

In the Hagi all stars the likes of Trevor Hatton, Carlos Echeveria, Carlo Scali, Michael Di Fulvio, Darren Freeman, Terry Nicolaou, and Paul Borg, to name a few, rolled the back the years to play against a current Swan IC XI.

It was a warm day in the Swan Valley, and the opening exchanges were fierce, with Di Fulvio showing glimpses of his Fabio Cannavaro skill holding the all stars together at the back with Chris Perks and Freeman, and in the second minute Doogs woke up, put the flag down and joined in.

There were a number of chances in the first half with Swans current Coach Paul Lincoln firing straight at Frank Letizia for the Swan XI while older brother of Justin Hugo, Vic, was sent clear by Damien Todorovic but with just his brother, Cory, to beat he fired into the side netting.

The weather was taking its toll with the interchange bench being used more times than an AFL game, but after a drinks break at half time the game came to life. Hatton showed glimpses of his legendary midfield grit while the ‘Smiling assassin’ – Darren Freeman (left) showed he’d not lost any of his aggression taking out Mick De Ra with a typical Freeman challenge.

With former Coaches Di Fulvio and Carlo Scali revving up the all star team, and Lincoln, who was on fire, doing likewise for the Swan XI the game was end to end. Terry Nicolaou’s shot from 25-yards crashed off the crossbar, and Justin Hugo was thwarted by Swan XI keeper Danyal Bennett.

Bennett was between the sticks and Cory Hugo was on the park and the biggest laugh of the day came midway through the second half when a blatant foul on Justin by Cory, brought a smile to everyone’s face, no brotherly love there!!!!.

The opening goal came ten minutes before the end, when Damian Scali lobbed Letizia from long-range to give the Swan XI the lead.

It was Hagi’s day and for the rest of the game all three Hugo brothers played on the same side for the first time in a number of years and the all stars staged a late recovery led by the inspirational Di Fulvio (Cheques made out to P.Simcox Doogs!!!) and they levelled with the last kick of the match, with a stunning goal. Borg picked the ball up on the edge of the box and fired into the top left hand corner giving Bennett no chance.

So it was to penalties, after the oxygen that is! All the Hugo brothers stepped up and scored and with the score locked at 4-4 Chris Perks stepped up to score the winner for the all stars.

It was a great day for Hagi, and from everyone at the Swan IC Football Club, good luck Justin in what ever you do. hanks for the memories mate!!!!!

Cole takes out Swan IC fairest and Best

The Swan IC presentation night was held in ballroom of the Swan Italian Club last Thursday evening and skipper Aaron Cole won the clubs fairest and best in a close contest. The 29-year-old edged out his young central defensive partner David McNally to take out the award. The www.swanic.com Players ‘Player of the Year’ trophy was won by McNally and the leagues top goalscorer was Damian Scali.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was delighted with Cole’s season. “'Aaron has led by example all season and he thoroughly deserves the award. He has been a model of consistency and a great team leader.

“To have a player like Coley at the back has been invaluable for me this season, and his experience has been fantastic for the younger players around him and David McNally has come on leaps and bounds alongside Coley this season,” said Lincoln.

The Under 23’s fairest and best was won by big defender Conor Mahady, with midfielder Shane Webb as the runner up. Mahady, who has had a stellar season since his return to the club from Armadale this season, also took out the www.swanic.com Players ‘Player of the Year’ trophy while Matthew Webb was the top goalscorer.

The Under 18’s fairest and best was won by striker Simon Williams with defender Stephen Hardy as the runner up. Williams also won the www.swanic.com Players ‘Player of the year’ trophy and the top goalscorer.

The 2008 Jimmy Jamison Award for the Swan IC clubman of the year was won by hard working committee member Enio Paolone

21.09.08 - Swans push Champions all the way

The Swans finished their 2008 season with a 1-2 loss against Football West Premier League champions Sorrento at Francis Street on Saturday. Paul Lincoln’s side push Sorrento all the way, and deserved a least a point from the game.

The Swans defended in numbers in the first half with Aaron Cole and David McNally outstanding, and they hit the front on 53 minutes. Swans youngster Alex Cocking found Dom Ando on the right, he skipped past Calum O’Connell and crossed to the back post and Andy O’Neill (right) volleyed past Neil Young from six-yards.

The gulls were back on level terms six minutes later through Todd Harnwell, and they hit the front on 67 minutes, Lewis Flatt’s cross from the right was mis-judged by Cory Hugo and as Ando attempted to head clear under pressure from Trpevski he headed into his own goal. It looked like a free kick to the Swans defender but referee Troy Miller gave the goal.

Miller was public enemy number one when somehow he waved away penalty appeals from the Swans, first when Aaron Cole was brought down in the box and in the last minute when O’Neill was brought down by Jason Trpevski, much to the displeasure of the Swans faithful. (Full report later)

In other games Gary Mateljan’s under 18’s went down 2-3 to Sorrento with Dara McNally on target twice, while Mick Da Re’s under 23’s also lost 2-3 to Sorrento.

19.09.08 - Swans host the Champions in round 22

The Swans host the 2008 Football West Premier League Champions Sorrento FC tomorrow in the final game of the season at Francis Street (3pm)

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was very happy with last week’s away victory at Inglewood and hopes to end the season on a high. “Last week’s 3 – 0 away win to Inglewood was our first win away from home this season and it was good to finally win against Inglewood knowing they have had the wood (excuse the pun) on us for some time. The boys stuck with the game plan and we produced one of our best performances of the season,” said Lincoln.

On Saturday’s game against Sorrento he knew for a while they would win the league. “I said on a radio interview six weeks ago that they have been the best side we have played this season and I predicted would win the league. The last time we met they gave us a football lesson so today we will be looking to make amends.

“A win will see us finish seventh on the ladder which would be a result not many would have predicted at the start of the season,” added Lincoln.

A strong recruitment drive swelled the ranks at Percy Doyle Reserve with the arrival of some of the state's best talent, players of the calibre of Stuart Montgomery, Shaun Kilkelly and Michael Ord. They complimented the existing core group of Neil Young, Steve MacDonald, Glen Thomas, Scott Neville and Todd Harnwell. Making the last four of the Night Series provided only a glimpse of what they were capable of and Sorrento have displayed a fighting spirit that has taken them to the title.

It should be a great game get along and support the black and whites. The 18’s kick off at 11am, the 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $8 adults and $6 concessions. Under 15’s are admitted free.

Last time we met Sorrento at Francis Street

Swan IC 1 Sorrento 0 at Francis Street - Football West Premier League Round 22 - 2007

The last time we met Sorrento at Francis Street was in the final round of last season when the black and whites ended their campaign on a positive with Dejan Djukanovic (right) securing a 1-0 win.

There was no shortage of early chances as both teams came out with only one thing on their mind. A quick Damien Catalano free-kick caught Sorrento napping at the back but David Perich placed wide, and two minutes later Scott Neville cut in from the left but his low shot was kept out by Cory Hugo.

A driving run by Lewis Flat forced a fine save from Hugo, and the end to end nature continued with a long range strike by Damien Scali that was saved by Neil Young. Sorrento were creating by greater chances as Jason Trpevski headed narrowly wide from a Glen Thomas corner, while Jared Love’s first time shot was superbly blocked by Hugo.

The breakthrough arrived six minutes from half-time when Hugo’s long ball was helped on by Tom Shepheard for Djukanovic to fire past Young. Shepheard should have doubled the hosts lead by headed wide at close range from a Brendan Knox corner.

Sorrento was fast out of the blocks after the break as Thomas threaded the ball through to Love whose low shot had Hugo at full-stretch. Djuknaovic could have wrapped up the game in the 67th minute when found by Shepheard but his shot from eight-yards was instinctively saved by Young. Much of the Gulls attacking play stemmed from Thomas who, in the 76th minute, sent Boyle through for Hugo to spoil the opportunity.

Neville thought he’d brought the team by finding the net a minute later but referee Troy Miller disallowed the youngsters’ effort for offside. With four minutes remaining Swan brought veteran defender Trevor Hatton (left) off the bench for his final appearance in the clubs’ famous black and white stripes.

14.09.08 - Cocking’s double end’s Swans away day blues

Inglewood United 0 Swan IC 3

Swan IC teenager striker Alex Cocking (right) scored twice and Dom Ando the other as the Swans won on the road for the first time this season, with a 3-0 victory against Inglewood United at the Clipsal Stadium in round 21 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday.

Both sides were missing influential players for the clash, Michael Baczynski and Keith Griffiths for the home side, while Damian Scali and Justin Hugo were missing for the Swans.

It was an uninspiring start to the game, with both sides struggling to hold possession. It was the visitors who had the first opportunity on 12 minutes, Trent Wood found space down the right and his through ball sent Cocking clear but keeper Oliver Taseski was out quick to save.

The home side looked flat and it was the Swans that began to get on top. First Ando’s cross from the right on 16 minutes was headed wide by Cocking from six-yards, and moments later Brendan Knox’s in swinging corner was pushed over the bar by the alert Taseski.

With their top four aspirations still in their own hands, Inglewood lifted and went close on 20 minutes. Daniel Kovacevic’s cross from the right found the unmarked David Whiteside on the edge of the box, but his shot flew inches over the bar. It was the best period of the game for Inglewood and skipper Shane Pryce should have done better eight minutes later, when he fired over the top from close-range after good work from Whiteside on the left.

After the let off the Swans pressed forward and from David Paone’s great through ball on 32 minutes Cocking was in on goal, but Taseski was out quick to narrow the angle well and the youngster’s shot was blocked by the Inglewood custodian. Taseski had to come to his side to rescue again moments later, firstly saving Andy O’Neill’s shot and then clutching onto Chris Marshall’s header.

As the half ended the home side began to get on top, Whiteside’s cross from the left on 40 minutes found David Houston at the back post, his header from six-yards was well saved by Cory Hugo. Then two minutes later Matt Wardle’s shot was saved low by Hugo. In stoppage time Inglewood had claims for a penalty when it looked like Houston was held back by David McNally but referee David Currie waved away their protests, and it was scoreless at the break.

With the help of the strong breeze the home side opened brightly in the second half, and two minutes in Perth Glory Youth squad member James Sammut’s curling free kick into the box beat everyone and went inches past the post.

The game was in desperate need of a goal and it came on 66 minutes for the visitors. A through ball over the top of the Inglewood defence from Knox sent Dejan Djukanovic clear and he was brought down by Taseski, and referee Currie had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and showing a red card to the keeper.

Both players seemed to be going for the ball, but that’s the law and Taseski had to go, defender Daniel Kovacevic was sacrificed with reserve keeper Lewis Italiano coming on. Italiano’s first action of the game was to save Knox’s penalty but Ando (left) was quickest to the rebound and fired home from close-range to give the Swans the lead.

It was 2-0 nine minutes later in similar circumstances. Djukanovic broke down the right, he crossed into Cocking on the left hand side of the penalty and as the youngster went around the keeper he was brought down and Currie pointed to the spot again. Cocking picked himself up to fire low past Italiano to double the Swans lead.

The game was put out of reach of the home side two minutes later, with a well crafted goal. Wood and Cocking combined on the right and Cocking’s pace took him clear and he finished clinically low past Italiano.

The Swans brought on their under 18’s top goal scorer, Simon Williams, for his league debut on 83 minutes, and he was straight into the action. His through ball sent Cocking clear but Italiano was out quick to save and deny the youngster his hat trick.

A good end to the season on the road for the Swans and Coach Paul Lincoln was delighted.

“At long last we’ve won away from home. The boy’s played really well today and it was quite a contrast to last week when we were poor. We were far the better side for 90 minutes and we created a number of opportunities. I’m delighted.

“We were missing a few players today but we looked up for it today and they looked flat. It’s great for the lads to get the win, and for me, the last couple of weeks have been tough,” explained Lincoln.

Inglewood United Coach Lee Bamber was bitterly disappointed.

“We were shocking today! We’ve not started games well for a few weeks and we did the same today. We looked flat and with injuries and suspensions at the moment it seems to be catching up with us.

“We’ve got to go to Fremantle Spirit next week and get a result and they are going to be desperate for a win, with Stirling winning today it makes next weeks fixtures very important for us and our top four chances,” said Bamber.

In other games Mick Da re’s under 23’s lost 0-3, while Gary Mateljan’s under 18’s went down 2-3

12.09.08 - Swans look to end away day blues at Inglewood

The Swans visit the Clipsal Stadium on Saturday to take on Inglewood United in round 21 of the Football West Premier League (3pm). Paul Lincoln’s side will be looking to end their poor away form in their final game on the road this season and pick up their first victory away from Francis Street this season.

Swans Coach was disappointed after last weeks defeat against the Lions, and hopes for a better showing this week. “We were in the game in the first half last week but we gave the ball away to easy in the middle of the park and the Lions capitalised on that. “It’s the hard reality of the game in the Premier League if you give the opposition the ball easy they will punish you,” said Lincoln.

For Lincoln it’s a return to his former club, the striker joined the Swans from United. “It’s always good to return to a former club and Saturday will be no exception. It was up and down times for me there, I really enjoyed it when John Hunter was coach, but I found it difficult under Steve Parkinson, never the less I was able to knock a few in for them which is always good,” said Lincoln.

On the game against Lee Bamber’s side Lincoln is hoping for a big effort from the side. “It would definitely be nice to win away from home, something we haven’t been able to do this year. It’s going to be a tough assignment, Inglewood have only lost once at home so far this season but records are there to be broken,” explained Lincoln.

In team news the Swans changing rooms is looking more like a hospital ward at the moment Michael Tronchin, Paul Baczynski (left), Daniel Agudelo along with the Under 23’s  Matthew Webb , Jake Da Re and Niell Hughes are all out for the season, while Justin Hugo and Damian Scali are suspended. Lincoln said: “There’s not a lot you can do about injuries and suspensions you just have to get on with it. Our 23’s have been decimated; we only have nine players, so it will mean some of the 18’s will have to step up. I’ve added the under 18’s top scorer Simon Williams to the senior squad for Saturday’s game.”

Inglewood will be without striker Kevin Griffiths and midfielder Michael Baczynski due to suspension, but they have been the surprise packet of the season and are currently sitting in fourth spot. They were beaten last week against Mandurah City and will look to bounce back so it should be a great encounter.

Get along and support the Swans, under 18’s kick off at 11am, under23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $8 adults, $6 concessions and under 5’s are admitted free.

Last time we met Inglewood at the Clipsal Stadium

Inglewood United 2 Swan IC 0 – Round 19 – 01.09.07

The last time we met Inglewood at the Clipsal Stadium a goal in each half earned United a 2-0 win. David Foster (right)got on the end of a Michael Tronchin cross to force a good save from Oliver Taseski as the visitors started positively. Inglewood suffered a setback in the 5th minute when experienced sweeper Danny Stoitis left the field injured to be replaced by James Duncan.

Swan kept pressing as Taseski moved sharply to kept out a Damian Scali header, then David Perich chanced his luck from distance with a shot that was narrowly wide. The host’s first opening came shortly after and Daniel Neiderberger should have done better than shoot well over the crossbar. As play see-sawed from one end to the other it was the defences who stood out, in particular Daniel Kovacevic and Shane Pyrce for the hosts, and Aaron Cole and David McNally for Swan.

With the half drawing to a close Dean Aplegren played a superb through ball for Niederberger whose first time shot flew just the wrong side of the post. Referee Ton Klaver pointed to the spot in the 43rd minute after ruling Brendan Knox handled the ball, and although Cory Hugo guessed the right way he was unable to prevent Niederberger from putting Inglewood ahead.

The second half opened with chances at both ends of the park but Knox shot high and Kevin Griffiths wide. Albert Osei-Tutu shot weakly at Hugo as Inglewood attempted to make the points safe, then Aaron Cole denied Griffiths with a goal line clearance.

Their reward came minutes later when Shaun Kilkelly netted at close-range after Hugo parried Niederberger’s header from a Griffiths cross. Colli went close to adding a third to Inglewood’s tally late in the piece, while the closest Swan came to getting a consolation was Tom Shepheard’s effort that flew wide.

Wood on fire at Swans

A mid- season move from first division Forrestfield United has paid dividens for Trent Wood, the youngster has fitted in well at Francis Street and his recent first team performances has given him hope of a continued stay in the side.

He arrived from the Hartfield Park club with his older brother Matt, and is more than happy with the move. “I've always had a desire to play at top state level and could not see me achieving this if I remained at Forrestfield,” said 18-year-old Trent.

He had a stellar season in 2006, when he won the Football West Division one under 18 league fairest and best and the golden boot, and the youngster was also invited to represent NSW state youth side A.P.I.A Leichhardt in the 2008 Viareggio tournament in Italy.

The midfielder made an early impression in the Black and Whites under 23’s before making his debut for Paul Lincoln’s side at Stirling Lions in round 9 as a second half substitute. He started for the first time at Mandurah City in round 16 and he is now getting used to the pace of the game in senior side. “I've really enjoyed the step up to first team, the pace of the game is a lot faster than I have ever played before and it presents me a new challenge,” explained Wood.

Swans Coach Lincoln believes Wood has been great in his brief spell at Francis Street and the more he plays the better he will come. “Trent is a great lad and is willing to learn, he’s still coming to grips with the pace of the game at this level and his recent performances have been mixed. His game against Fremantle was excellent and was a deserved winner of the man of the match award, with more matches under his belt his game will improve,” said Lincoln.

Having had a taste of first team football Wood wants more but he knows he’ll have to work hard on his game. “Since moving from Forrestfield my goal for this season was to try and prove myself to the coach that I could play at this level. So every time I get the opportunity I strive to play the best I can. Hopefully I can continue to perform for the remainder of the season and hold a place in the first team,” explained Wood

The pint sized midfielder has played a number of roles at the club on the park but is grateful to Coach Lincoln and will play where he’s told too. “My favourite position would have to be centre mid, because I’m always on the ball creating things, but I’ll pay anywhere Linc’s tells me.

“I think he’s done a tremendous job in his first year as a senior coach which is evident by the respect all the players have for him. It's great that he has given the young players the opportunity to gain experience which can only help the club in years to come. Hopefully we can finish the season with a few more wins to contribute to his success,” said Wood.

06.09.08 - Swans beaten by the Lions

Swan IC 0 Stirling Lions 2

The Swans lost for only the second time at Francis Street this season after Jordan Rhodes and Ashley Rosindale gave Stirling Lions a 2-0 win in round 20 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday.

Swans made three changes to the side that lost at Armadale last week with Trent Wood, Alex Cocking and Justin Hugo replacing Robert Monterosso, Dejan Djukanovic and Geoff Mason who all dropped to the bench.

On a perfect day in the Swan Valley, the Lions opened brightly and on four minutes Jordan Rhodes’ corner from the left almost sneaked in at the back post but Cory Hugo was alert to push it way. Rhodes was involved again on 10 minutes, he was found on the left by a great ball from Steve Hesketh and the midfielders cross caused panic in the Swans defence and Chris Marshall had to be alert to clear the danger.

The home side’s first opportunity fell to teenager striker Alex Cocking (left) who was sent clear on 11 minutes by a Damian Scali through ball but he delayed his shot and Michael Pugliese was able to get back to block. Cocking was in again sixty seconds later, Dom Ando’s ball found him six-yards from goal but his shot on the turn flew over the top of the crossbar.

It was the best period of the game for the Swans and Scali fired wide from long-range on 18 minutes and after a good run by Justin Hugo two minutes later, Brendan Knox’s through ball into Cocking was slightly over hit and Phil Straker was out quick to save.

The Lions went close on 25 minutes a long kick from Straker found Rosindale on the right, his cross was mishit by Marshall, Keith Clevenger’s follow up shot was blocked and Ando cleared.

Both sides had chances late in the half, Swans Andy O’Neill’s corner from the right was headed back by Aaron Cole to David McNally (right) and the defender controlled and volleyed from the edge of the box, but it was straight at Straker who saved. Then the Lions’ Marc Anthony crossed to Phil Arnold and his challenge on keeper Cory Hugo made the keeper drop the ball and with the keeper on the ground injured the referee waved play on and the Swans managed to clear the ball. Swans Coach Paul Lincoln let the referee know his views as they left the pitch at half time.

The Swans opened the second half well and from Cory Hugo’s long kick on 48 minutes; Knox sent O’Neill into the box but Straker was out quick to save at his feet. Then five minutes later Marshall’s cross from the left found Trent Wood at the back post, his first time shot deflected off Hesketh and landed on top of the net.

Michael Lyons’ side began to get on top again and a great move started by Rosindale on 54 minutes almost gave them the lead. He found Anthony on the left hand side of the penalty area who in turn found Rhodes whose goalbound shot was blocked by McNally.

On the hour Dean Evans’ long-range curling free kick was well saved by Cory Hugo, and Rosindale crossed to Rhodes moments later but he fired wide from five-yards.

Their pressure paid off on 69 minutes with the opener, Hesketh’s found Anthony on the edge of the box; his shot was deflected to Rhodes who fired home from eight-yards in a crowded penalty area.

The goal lifted the visitors and they continued to press, Ludovic Boi and Anthony combined on 74 minutes to find Rosindale, who fired wide from close-range. Paul Lincoln’s side looked to get back in the game and on 78 minutes Ando’s cross found McNally unmarked at the back post, his header was superbly saved by Straker and the follow up shot from Scali struck Pugliese and the Swans appealed vigorously for a handball but referee Kevin Taylor waved away their protests.

Both sides had chances in the latter stages of the game, Rhodes fired over the top on 80 minutes for the Lions, while Scali fired wide for the Swans moments later. The Swans were reduced to ten men when Justin Hugo (left) was given a second yellow card by Taylor for intentional handball, and the points were secured for the visitors in the 91st minute, and what a goal it was. Boi’s cross from the right was spectacularly volleyed home by Rosindale past Cory Hugo from eight-yards.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was disappointed. “I thought we were in the game in the first half and created some good chances, but the second half we gave the ball away too much and they punished us. We were undermanned again but that’s no excuse, we will look to rebound next week at Inglewood,” said Lincoln.

Lions’ Coach Michael Lyons was happy with the victory. “They’ve only lost once at home this season so to win is a great effort from the lads and while it’s still mathematically possible we can reach the top four we’ll be doing all we can for the rest of the season,” said Lyons.

On Rosindale’s goal Lyons was delighted for him. “He works really hard in a game and he’s a bright intelligent player and reacts well both defensively and offensively. He was rewarded with a great goal, an overhead kick in the last minute, I’m delighted for him,” added Lyons.

In other games Swans under 23’s were beaten 1-2 by the Lions 23’s, while the under 18’s held the Lions under 18’s 1-1. The visitors haven’t lost all season and were pushed all the way by the young Swans. Coach Gary Mateljan was delighted after the game. “We played really well today, against the league leaders, I’m really proud of the lads. Dara McNally, Alex Malloch and Stephen Hardy were all outstanding, but the rest of the players weren’t far behind them,” said Mateljan. The scorer for the Swans was Dyson Rushworth.

05.09.08 - Swans host the Lions at Francis Street in round 20

The Swans are back on home soil this weekend when they entertain Stirling Lions in round 20 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday at Francis Street. (3pm)

The defeat at Armadale last week was very disappointing for Swans Coach Paul Lincoln and he hopes for a better performance on Saturday against the Lions. “Last week’s result at Armadale was disappointing but for me it was not so much the scoreboard it was the way we played. It would be fair to say that no one played well and that although we worked hard we didn’t have the ability to keep the ball,” said Lincoln.

He continued: “Armadale have been able to bring in two players from overseas and both James Robinson and Nao Oishi caused us problems. We have to learn quickly you have to be on your game in every game in this league or you will get beaten,”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s game Lincoln hopes his players are switched on. “We’ve done really well at home and we hope to continue that on Saturday. We have been hit with injuries and its more than likely Daniel Agudelo and Michael Tronchin will be out for the rest of the season. Paul Bazcynski (left) can’t take a trick and needed surgery to mend a head injury but should be available next week.

“We face the Lions who we drew with 3 all earlier on in the season, and they have picked up in recent weeks so we’re expecting a tough game, but the guys are hurting from last week and I expect an improvement especially from the senior players today. A win will see us move to 27 points and above the Lions on the table,” explained Lincoln.

The Lions are coming off a 1-1 draw at home to Mandurah City last week, and they have been held together at the back by the experienced keeper Phil Straker, while youngster Dean Evans, Michael Pugliese have been outstanding in defence. Last time we met the Lions at Francis Street

Swan IC 1 Stirling Lions 3 – Round 4 – 05-05-07

The last time the Swans met the Lions at Francis Street a commanding first half display laid the foundations for Stirling Lions’ 3-1 win.

It took Stirling just six minutes to assert their authority as Ludovic Boi skipped past two defenders before crossing the back post where Leo Harman tapped in. With Steve Porter dominant in the middle of the park, the visitors continued to press as Kevin Henderson’s lob was cleared off the line by Anthony McStea, and Aaron Cole did likewise minutes later to frustrate David Dugdale.

Swan didn’t create a chance until midway through the period when David Foster forced Darko Ilomanoski into conceding possession only to have Phil Straker saved his low shot. The difference became two goals on the half hour as Boi slipped a pass to Dugdale who kept his composure in lobbing the on-coming Cory Hugo.

There was little more spark to Swans after the break as Foster headed wide from a McStea cross, and Geoff Mason’s fierce strike from 7-metres was brilliantly kept out by Straker. Swan were back in the game on 75 minutes when Damien Scali (right) converted from the penalty spot after Straker was ruled to have brought Mason down inside the area.

With Swan now in control, Stirling were limited to playing on the counter attack and through such a move Keith Brown headed narrowly high from a Boi cross. The hosts received a massive setback on 88 minutes with the harsh dismissal of McStea for dissent by Jeremy Oliphant.

Wasting no time in making the most of the extra man, Stirling worked a third goal which Arnold shot low past Hugo. The day only got worse for Swan who saw out the final minutes with nine players following the red carding of David Perich for a second bookable offence.

Swans duo name in State Squad

Swans duo Aaron Cole (right) and Damian Scali have been selected in the Western Australian Men’s State team, and Coach Robbie Dunn has selected a 32 man squad in preparation for the Stratco Cup clash against South Australia on October 11.

The squad will be trimmed before they are due to depart for Adelaide for the clash against the South Australian state team at Marsden Sports Complex in October.

Dunn has been delighted at the response from the players so far in making themselves available for selection.

“The players can now see that Football West are serious about the State team and have been brilliant in making themselves available” said Dunn.

“It is a great honour to play for your state and we had Scott Bulloch sign with the Perth Glory on the back of his performance for the state side against them in June”.

“I am confident that we will have our A-team available and primed for action come October 11 to knock off the ‘crow eaters’ and bring the Stratco Cup back to WA”.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was delighted for the duo. “Their selection in the preliminary squad is a reward for an excellent season for the Swans..

“Both have led by example on and off the pitch and I wish them all the best for the final selection,” said Lincoln.

Preliminary WA State Men’s Squad:

Andy Brown, Phil O’Callaghan (Mandurah City), Liam Lilley, Johnny Mirco, (Cockburn City), Callum Roberts, Jason Barrera (Fremantle Spirit), Luka Jukic, David Micevski (Western Knights), John Lund, Darryl Platten (Armadale), Aaron Cole, Damian Scali (Swan IC), Antonio Naglieri, Greg Sharland, Matt Danskin, David Onoforo, Gareth Deeg, Todd Howarth (Perth SC), Stuart Montgomery, Todd Harnwell, Neil Young (Sorrento), Ian McMurray, Craig Young (ECU Joondalup), Jason Colli, Shayne Pryce (Inglewood), Adam Bachillor, John Migas, Ante Kovacevic, Daniel Niederberger, Brad Scott (Floreat Athena), Marc Anthony, Phil Straker (Stirling Lions)

Bad day at the office for Swans at Armadale

Armadale 4 Swans 1

Armadale secured their Premier League future after stunning Swan IC 4-1 in Saturday’s Football West Premier League clash at Alfred Skeet Oval. Strike partners Nao Oishi and James Robinson scored two a piece for Brad Hassell’s side, and with their nearest rivals Fremantle Spirit beaten 2-4 at home by Western Knights the Reds can contemplate Premier League football at the club next season.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln made two changes to the side that beat Fremantle Spirit last week with Robert Monterosso and Geoff Mason replacing the suspended Justin Hugo and the injured Michael Tronchin.

A minutes silence was observed prior to kick off in a mark of respect for the sad passing of former Armadale SC committee member and major sponsor Mr. Andrew Johnson. He would have been proud of the clubs afternoon to come.

Swan IC arrived without a win on the road this season and they began brightly. Andy O’Neill’s great run past three defenders on four minutes ended with Armadale keeper Beau Geerlings blocking his initial shot, and the 17-year-old keeper pounced on the rebound.

Then five minutes later Geoff Mason found Brendan Knox in space on the right, his shot from the angle went over the bar, and sixty seconds later Dom Ando’s free kick found the Swans leading goalscorer Damian Scali, who headed just over the bar.

The home side settled and their first opportunity came on 12 minutes, Gary Faria’s corner found its way to Andrew Bowyer, whose first time shot was straight at Cory Hugo.

It was end-to-end football now as both sides looked to take control of the game. The Swans best opportunity of the match came on 18 minutes, Scali was the provider, his run and cross from the left found Dejan Djukanovic (left) five-yards out, but his diving header was well saved by Geerlings.

Then on their next foray forward the home side hit the front, Robinson’s intelligent ball on 19 minutes spilt the Swans defence wide open and Japanese import Oishi finished clinically past Hugo for his first senior goal for the club.

The goal seemed to settle the Reds down and they went close again on 26 minutes, Faria’s perfectly weighted pass sent Robinson clear, but the Englishman’s low shot was deflected wide by Hugo.

A poor clearance from Geerlings on the half hour almost let the visitors back into the game but Scali’s lob back into an unguarded net was just past the post, and five minutes later O’Neill cut in from the right but his shot was straight at Geerlings.

It was 2-0 to the home side on 40 minutes, Faria and Robinson combined again on the left, and when Robinson cut the ball back Oishi fired home via the post to double Brad Hassell’s sides lead at the break.

Armadale began the second half where they left off in the first; Mo Atak crossed from the right on 50 minutes and found the unmarked Robinson who headed over from six-yards. The Swans also had their chances, on the hour O’Neill’s run and cross found Mason in on goal, but the young striker delayed his shot and the chance was lost.

Robinson was having a superb game and he went close to increasing the home sides lead on 64 minutes, he cut inside the box from the right but his low shot was well saved by Hugo (right) at full stretch.

Moments later Robinson beat three Swans defenders on the right and his delicate chip from the edge of the box crashed off the crossbar with Hugo well beaten.

Hugo was a busy man; first he denied Oishi his hat-trick with a smart save to his right on 67 minutes and sixty seconds later saved Kodi Madeley’s shot from 18-yards. The home side’s pressure finally paid off and it was 3-0 on 70 minutes. Robinson won possession on the left of the box from Swans defender Chris Marshall, and he kept his composure and fired low past Hugo, much to the delight of the Armadale faithful.

It was 4-0 on 80 minutes and Robinson again showed his quality in front of goal, he was sent clear by Matt Bennion’s pass and he finished clinically past a stranded Hugo.

Armadale were looking for more and Madeley found a rampaging Robinson on 83 minutes, but this time the striker fired inches wide of the post from the edge of the box.

Swans earned themselves a consolation goal in the 85th minute, Ando’s free kick was misjudged by Geerlings and it rebounded into the net off the unfortunate Reds defender Mark Darby.

Second half substitute Alex Cocking almost pulled another goal back for the visitors late on, but his shot at the back post went into the side netting.

A great victory for Armadale and Coach Brad Hassell was delighted. “With results elsewhere it looks we’re safe and we want to finish the season off strongly and today showed that. We played some good football and James and Nao were outstanding today up front, but our defence were also good protecting our 17-year-old keeper Beau Geerlings,” said Hassell.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was disappointed after the game. “We weren’t at the races today, I told the boys after the game technically we were very poor today, including some of our senior players.

“Robinson killed us today he was quality, not too many players I’ve seen this year can do what he did to our defence today, he had us at sixes and sevens all afternoon, he was a different class,” said Lincoln

30.08.08 - Swans well beaten by Reds

The Swans poor away record continued when they were beaten 1-4 by Armadale in round 19 of the Football West Premier League at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday.

They opened brightly and the home side’s keeper Beau Geerlings produced a couple of good saves from Dejan Djukanovic and Andy O’Neill to keep his side in the game. The Reds hit the front on 16 minutes when Nao Oishi scored and he doubled it on 40 minutes.

Second half goals from the impressive English import James Robinson sealed the victory for the home side, the Swans consolation came late, Dom Ando’s (left) free kick in the 85th minute was misjudged by Geerlings and it rebounded off defender Mark Darby and into the net. (Full report later)

In other games Gary Mateljan’s under 18’s staged a sensational second half fight back to eventually draw 5-5 with Armadale. They were 0-4 down at the break but a second half hat-trick from Simon Williams, Hayden Cooney’s strike and own goal gave them a point. Mick Da Re’s under 23’s ran out comfortable 3-0 winners against Armadale, with two goals from Mathew Webb and another from Marco Taglieretti

29.08.08 - Swans look to end their away day blues at Armadale

The Swans will be looking for their first victory on the road for 2008 when they travel to Alfred Skeet Oval to take on Armadale in round 19 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday (3pm)

The Swans are coming off back-back home victories against Western knights and Fremantle Spirit and Coach Paul Lincoln hopes to take their home form on the road this week. “We had to fight hard last week to get the three points against Fremantle, but on the whole I thought we deserved the victory,” said Lincoln.

Some of the youngsters stood up last week and Lincoln was delighted. “Trent Wood and Michael Tronchin played well last week and it gives us confidence heading to Armadale this week. Once again Aaron Cole was superb against the Spirit and he is leading by example, also damian scali who notched up his 17 th goal of the season last week,” added Lincoln.

On the trip to Armadale Lincoln is hoping to change their poor away record. “Yes our away record is poor, we have not won a game on the road this season and with Armadale in good form having taken points from there last two matches it is going to be a real challenge for us, but one we’re looking forward too,” said Lincoln.

In team news Andy O’Neill (right) returns to the squad after missing last weeks win against Fremantle and Lincoln has a full squad to choose from.

The Reds will be missing keeper Cyril Sharrock and defender Daryl Platten due to suspension but apart from that Brad Hassell has a full side to choose from. Import striker James Robinson has been in good form while former Perth Glory midfielder Gary Faria is pulling the strings in midfield.

Last Time we met the Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval

Armadale 3 Swans 2 - Round 7 2007

The last time we met the Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval was in round 7 last season when the home side won their first game of the Premier League season, 3-2 in a fiercely contested encounter.

Sustained early pressure from the home side was rewarded after 11 minutes when Scott Paterson’s free-kick found an unmarked Darren Kingston who headed in at close-range. Armadale’s dominance resulted in a second goal on 32 minutes as Kodi Madeley’s cross was spilt by Daniel Agudelo and in the blink of an eye Jason Goodwin had lashed the ball in from close-range.

Swan responded through the very next attack in which Tom Shepheard delivered the ball from the left for John Monterosso to fire past Cyril Sharrock. It was only now that the visitors came to life and not long after they were had appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Matthew Cheeseman.

Swan laid siege to their opponent’s goal as Sharrock gathered possession under pressure from Shepheard, and Dom Ando fired high when well positioned. A deserved equaliser arrived ten minutes from half-time when Justin Hugo’s cross was poorly dealt with by the defence allowing Brendan Knox to find the net from five-yards. Shortly before the interval Swan lost Agudelo after he clashed with Kingston and was rushed to hospital suffering a lower back injury.

The second half began with Swan in full flight and McStea went close to putting the visitors ahead twice in as many minutes. However, Armadale weren’t to be outdone and Goodwin fired wide while another Kingston header flashed the wrong side of the post.

The 66th minute produced the deciding goal via a quick counterattack in which Stephen Skilandis’ deep cross was put away by Kingston. Swan worked tirelessly in their search for a third goal but found it difficult to break down a defence under the command of Dusan Macura and Daryl Platten.

Marshall steps up for Swans

They say in football you have to take your chances when they arrive, and for Swans defender Chris Marshall he has taken his with two good performances in the last two games for the Swan IC senior side. A strong year in the Swans under 23’s has given 21-year-old Marshall the opportunity to make the step up to the first team and he’s really enjoying it. “It’s been great playing in the senior side and to have won both games is a bonus.

“It’s definitely quicker and more physical than the reserves and I’m finding myself being sorer after games with the first team, and there is also that step up in quality too,” said Marshall.

The much maligned Swans backline last season conceded 61 goals, but it has been solid this season conceding only 39 goals, and playing along side Aaron Cole has given Marshall some much needed confidence in the side. “The coaches worked hard on the defence this season and they have had a really good year so far, and hopefully we can finish it off in the last few weeks.

“Playing along side Aaron at the back definitely makes your job easier. When you have players around you that have that experience and skill like most of our team does, you can just focus on your own game and you know everyone will do their bit and help you out,” explained Marshall.

Marshall, who is an environmental officer for the Department of Environment and Conservation, worked with the new Swans coach Paul Lincoln last season when he was the reserve team Coach and Marshall believes he has showed faith in some of the clubs younger players this season, and has helped him greatly. “I enjoyed working with him in the reserves and we had a lot of success there, I hope I can continue to work with him and the boys.

“Paul has achieved a lot already in his first year as coach, giving the younger guys a chance and they have gone on to become better players and regular first team starters, and this will be beneficial for the club in the long term,” added Marshall.

Swans Coach Lincoln hopes Chris can continue to work on his game for the rest of the season. “Chris has done exceptionally well and I was pleased for him that he scored on his debut. We need to consider that he hasn’t played against the stronger teams in the league so that will be his next challenge,” said Lincoln.

Marshall played his junior football at Swan Districts before attending the Swan IC Academy for a season. He joined the seniors at Francis Street when he was 17 and played in the under 18’s. The tall defender believes his dad Rick, who is a big Spurs fan, has been the biggest influence in his career to date. “He always played soccer and it led me into it, and helped me progress and has been able to give criticism and advice on my game.

What’s next for Chris Marshall the defender, well he just hopes to continue with his improvement. “I just want to continue playing with the first team and become as good as I can. Obviously I want to get as far as possible with my football career and take any chances that come my way, but for now all I’m thinking about is the present and this weekend’s game against Armadale,” said Marshall.

Catalano heads out of Francis Street

Swans striker Damien Catalano has left Francis Street after four successful seasons. It was a difficult decision for Catalano but he enjoyed his time at the club. “It was a very difficult decision to leave Francis Street. I missed pre-season and majority of the first round due to injury which I carried on from the previous season. This and increased work commitments hindered a successful return so I decided to take the rest of the year off to get the body right,’ explained Catalano.

The injuries are clearing up for Catalano and he hopes to make a full recovery. “The injury is excellent at the moment, my groin has settled now, and I’m doing my own training in preparation for next season,” added Catalano.

What is next for the talented striker? “I haven't really thought about that yet, my main concern is to get the body right, and so far so good!

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln said: “It’s always difficult when loyal players who have been at the club decide to leave and Damien is no exception. Damien wasn’t comfortable with a decision of mine and due to his other commitments he decided to leave. I expect Damien will go on our play with another club and I have no problems with that and I wish him all the best in the future.”

24.08.08 - Scali at the double for Swans

The Swans continued their good home form with a 3-1 win against Fremantle Spirit in Saturday’s Football West Premier League clash at Francis Street.

Veteran striker Damian Scali was the hero bagging two with Dejan Djukanovic the other after the visitors had taken an early lead through Calum Roberts.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was forced into one change with Andy O’Neill unavailable, teenager Trent Wood came into replace him in midfield.

The Swans opened brightly and from Justin Hugo’s free kick on two minutes, Chris Marshall headed wide at the back post. Fremantle, who were playing for their season and without a win all campaign, began to take control of the game. Cisco Jorquere found David Rodgers in the box, his lob cleared Cory Hugo but drifted wide of the post.

It was one-way traffic with the Spirit well on top and Jason Barerra’s shot from the edge of the box on nine minutes was saved at full stretch by Cory Hugo (right) and with Rodgers ready to pounce on the rebound the keeper recovered quickly to kick the ball to safety. From the resulting corner the Swans custodian saved magnificently from Rodger’s volley at the back post.

Spirit’s pressure paid off in the 13 th minute with a well deserved goal. Rodgers was given too much time and space in the middle of the park and he drifted inside three Swans defenders before firing past Cory Hugo from 12-yards.

It was just the start Marc Wignell’s side required but the Swans almost hit back immediately, Djukanovic’s shot from five-yards was deflected wide and Aaron Cole headed the resulting corner wide.

On 18 minutes the Swans levelled, Scali was the supplier flicking on to Djukanovic (left) who nicked in front of Spirit keeper Steve Grant to head home. The Swans were now on top and Wood’s half volley from the right landed on top of the net and on 25 minutes the Swans went close to the lead. Wood again was the provider cutting inside from the right and teeing up Justin Hugo whose low shot crashed off the near post and Michael Tronchin’s follow up shot crashed off the other post, and Grant claimed the rebound.

After their let off the Spirit began to get on top and a long ball from Grant sent Ben Kelly clear down the right on 35 minutes, his shot from six-yards flashed inches past the post. Two minutes later from Barerra’s free kick Swans defender David McNally headed clear under pressure from Rodgers.

As the half ended the Swans were defending desperately, McBride’s corner on 45 minutes was punched clear by Cory Hugo, but it was sent back into the box by Jorquere and Cole cleared the ball after a goalmouth scramble.

It was a terrible start to the second half for the visitors when Jorquere was given a straight red card by referee Josh Mihevc after a clash with Swans midfielder Tronchin. The ten men Spirit re-organised but it was the Swans who went close on the hour, Brendan Knox sent Wood clear on the right, his shot from the angle was well saved by Grant.

With the game still up for grabs, the ten men spirit began to dominate. First on 67 minutes Llewelyn Bake crossed from the right and Rodgers headed inches past the post and sixty seconds later Roberts was in on goal, he rounded Cory Hugo but blazed over from a tight angle.

The best chance then fell to Rodgers on 71 minutes, great work on the right by Barerra saw his cross find the Spirit striker two-yards from goal but somehow he headed over. That miss came back to haunt the visitors with the Swans taking the lead two minutes later. Knox won possession in the middle of the park and sent Wood clear down the right, his inch perfect cross found Scali who headed home from four-yards.

It was a bitter blow for the Spirit and the Swans almost made it three moments later. Second half substitute Alex Cocking was found down the right by Knox and cut the ball back to Scali who volleyed over from eight-yards. It was 3-1in the 78 th minute, Kelly’s attempted pass on the half way line hit Wood in the face. The ball fell kindly to Cocking who sent Scali clear in the penalty area and the striker fired home his 17 th goal of the season.

Scali came close to his hat-trick in stoppage time when Cocking and Geoff Mason combined to send the striker clear but a superb saving tackle from Tom Straker denied him.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was happy with the performance. “They started very well and there past four results had been good. To our credit we fought back from one down and in the second half we had an extra man with their sending off, and we created some good chances and overall I thought we deserved the points,” said Lincoln.

The coach was delighted with the contribution of youngster Trent Wood who was given the man of the match award. “Trent set the second goal up with a perfect cross to Damien and had a head in the third,” joked Lincoln.

“He’s a terrific lad and he’s showed he can play at this level and I’ve been really pleased with his effort at training and match days,” added Lincoln.

22.08.08 - Swans host the Spirit in round 18

The Swans host bottom of the table Fremantle Spirit in round 18 of the Football west Premier League clash at Francis Street on Saturday. (3pm) It will be a hard game for Paul Lincoln’s side has the Spirit will fighting for their Premier League survival and they have drawn their last three games.

Swans Coach Lincoln was happy with last weeks battling performance against the Knights. “Last week’s 3 – 2 win was pleasing although our second half performance was not the best. But saying that I thought we handled the pressure well late in the game and it was good to get all three points.

‘It was great to see Chris Marshall make his first team debut with a goal. Dejan Djukanovic started for the first time this year and his hard work was rewarded with a goal. Damien Scali continues to find the net and I’m hopeful he can carry this on for the rest of the season. David McNally was excellent and continues his rise as a very good player,” said Lincoln.

On the Spirit game Lincoln knows his players will have to be switched on. “We know Saturday’s game is going to be difficult and will need to play at our best to win. They haven’t won a game this season but their current form has been impressive and in the past month have they have drawn with Mandurah, ECU Joondalup, Perth and Cockburn. I’ve told the players to focus on their game and if we show the right commitment we’ll get the right result,” added Lincoln.

In team news John Mansaray’s season is over due to work commitments while Alex Cocking and Geoff Mason (left) have been added to the squad after last weeks win against the Knights.

Cory Hugo (right) appears to have overcome his ankle injury and he will be pivotal for the Swans for the remainder of the year.

Fremantle surprised many on their top flight return last season but have struggled to find that form this season and are yet too register a win. Keeper Steve Grant has been in good form between the sticks, along with defenders Lee Hallums, Tom Straker, Adrian McBride and Simon Elton-Bott. In Jason Barrera, Callum Roberts and Cisco Jorquiera they have three of the competitions' most exciting young players while a year on the sidelines has two time First Division top goalscorer David Rodgers champing at the bit.

Spirit are coming off three draws, and last time out should have registered their first win when they were 4-1 up at home to Mandurah City, but let the visitors back in the game to eventually draw 4-4.

Last time we met Spirit at Francis Street

Swan IC 2 Fremantle Spirit 3 at Francis Street - Football West Premier League Round 16 2007

The last time the Swans met Fremantle at Francis Street, a late long-range strike by Mark Darby earned Fremantle Spirit a 3-2. David McNally created the games' first opening by delivering a deep cross to Anthony McStea whose hesitation allowed Fremantle to clear the danger.

The port side was within inches of claiming the lead on 17 minutes when Jason Barrera's free-kick hit the upright and rolled along the goal line before Dom Ando (right) scrambled the ball to safety. Cory Hugo came to Swans' rescue with a stunning save from Cisco Jorquiera's long-range strike, and Steve Grant produced similar heroics by deflecting wide an Aaron Cole shot.

Swan could not have asked for a better start to the second half which was five minutes in when McStea's free-kick from the edge of the 18-yard box gave Grant no chance.

Fremantle hit back within a minute as Barrera who kept his composure to slide the ball into the net after an attempted clearance fell kindly for the midfielder. The visitors now began to dominate and on the hour Darby chased a long pass down the right which he fired low into the area where McNally had the misfortune of deflecting the ball into his own net. The port side were now flying and a long-range effort by Simon Elton-Bott sailed high, while Barrera's low strike forced a save from Hugo.

David Foster brought the teams level on 78 minutes by converting from the spot after Tom Straker bundled over Tom Shepheard (left). Hugo prevented Callum Roberts from putting Fremantle back in control by coming out on top in a one-on-one situation. But there was little the Swan custodian could do with seven minutes left when Darby rifled into the top corner from 22-metres. Swan's search to snatch a late point was foiled by a solid Fremantle rearguard in which veteran stopper Alex Christie was the stand out.

17.08.08 - Swans hold on for the points

Swan IC 3 Western Knights 2

Swan IC held off a fast finishing Western Knights to win 3-2 in round 17 of the Football West Premier League at Francis Street on Saturday. The black and whites were cruising at half time, 3-0, with goals from debutant Chris Marshall, Damian Scali and Dejan Djukanovic, but the Knights hit back with goals from skipper Daniel Trim and Rory Grant but it was too little too late for Ronnie Campbell’s side.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln made three changes to the side that lost at Mandurah City last week with Cory Hugo, Dejan Djukanovic and Chris Marshall coming into the side, with Daniel Agudelo and Trent Wood dropping down to the bench and Geoff Mason who was suspended.

The home side started the better and had the first opportunity on four minutes; Djukanovic was brought down on the edge of the box by Stuart Ferguson and Dom Ando’s powerful free kick was saved well by Kevin Miller.

Moments later Michael Tronchin found Brendan Knox in the box but the midfielders shot flew over the bar. The Swans pressure finally paid off with the lead on 17 minutes, Knox’s corner from the left was met by Scali, his header was cleared off the line by David Micevski but the rebound fell to Marshall (left) and the defender fired home from five-yards.

With Wednesday’s Soccer Pools Cup semi-final on their minds the Knights looked flat and Scali’s header from Cory Hugo’s free kick almost made it 2-0 on 20 minutes, Miller was alert to save. The Knights first opportunity came on 23 minutes, Micevski found Michael de Souza 20-yards from goal his low shot through a crowded penalty area was well saved by Cory Hugo.

It was the home side that was making all the running and it came as no surprise when they doubled their lead on 28 minutes. Ando charged down Ferguson’s attempted clearance and it fell kindly to Djukanovic his shot was cleared off the line, and although it looked like it had crossed the line, Scali made sure turning and firing home from close-range.

The Swans continued to press and on 34 minutes a great run and shot from Justin Hugo flashed inches wide. The Knights then went close to reducing the margin moments later, former Swans defender Jonathon Mathers found Grant on the edge of the box, but his shot went wide.

It was the visitors who were lifting late and from De Souza’s cross from the right on 40 minutes, Josip Peran headed wide. Then on the stroke of half time the Swans made it 3-0, another great run down the right from Justin Hugo, he cut inside and beat three Knights defenders, his shot was blocked by Miller but Djukanovic (left) was quickest to the rebound to fire home from close-range.

It was a different Knights team in the second half and they had a strong penalty claim turned down by referee John Taran in the opening sixty seconds, when Trim’s shot hit the arm of Justin Hugo, and Mathers follow up shot went wide.

Then Micevski tried his luck from long-range on the hour, but it was straight at Cory Hugo. The former Perth Glory midfielder was everywhere and he came within inches off reducing the deficit five minutes later, his shot from 25-yards crashed off the crossbar as the Knights continued to dominate.

It was only a matter of time before the Knights scored and it came on 78 minutes, Micevski’s free kick took a deflection off Trim, and although Cory Hugo got a hand to it he couldn’t stop it going in to the net.

The goal lifted the Knights but it was the Swans who almost hit back immediately, Tronchin found Ando 25-yards out, his shot flashed inches wide.

With Trim and Micevski dominating the middle of the park the Knights pressed and they were back in the game on 84 minutes, Grant heading home to set up an intriguing last six minutes.

The Knights pushed forward in search of the equaliser but with Aaron Cole and David McNally outstanding at the back the Swans hung on and Coach Paul Lincoln was happy with the victory. “I’m happy with the win but disappointed with our second half performance. We lost our way a little bit and I think the guy’s thought they had the game won and were cruising. The Knights fought it out and when they scored late to make it 3-2 I thought it was going to be one those days, but we held on which is great for us,” said Lincoln.

In other games Mick De Ra’s under 23’s won 5-1 against the Knights with goals from Neill Hughes, Marco Taglioretti, Paul Baczynski, Alex Cocking and Shane Webb, while Gary Mateljan’s under 18’s went down 1-3 to the Knights with Simon Williams on target.

15.08.08 - Swans host Knights in round 17

After last weeks 1-3 defeat at Mandurah City the Swans are back on home soil when they take on Ronnie Campbell’s Western Knights in round 17 of the Football West Premier League at Francis Street on Saturday (3pm)

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln is happy to be back at home. “Our win at home against ECU Joondalup two weeks ago was required especially after having lost our previous five and with David Perich playing his last game it was great that we were able to win.

“His influence was surely missed last week against Mandurah. The 3 – 1 loss was disappointing and I thought we didn’t handle the conditions that well and we made some crucial errors which Mandurah capitalised on,” said Lincoln.

Lincoln is looking forward to Saturday’s clash and hopes to continue the clubs good home record. “The Knights are coming off a 5 – 1 loss to league leaders Sorrento so they will be looking to bounce back and we will need everyone playing well to take all three points.

“We expect a tough physical game and will be looking to make amends from the last time we met at Nash Field,” said Lincoln.

In team news Cory Hugo and John Mansaray (left)missed last week and defender Paul Bazcynski wasn’t able to get through without being sore. Lincoln expects them to be available and with Alex Cocking returning after missing the last two games (representing WA Schoolboys team) battle for places is at a premium.

The Knights will be missing Luca Jukic and George Tihami, both through suspension, but they will have talented striker Anthony Skorich while Paul Cooke and Kevin Miller will be pushing for a recall to the side.

Last time we met the Knights at Francis Street

The last time the black and whites met the Knights at Francis Street they turned in their best performance of the year to beat the Ronnie Campbell’s side 2-0. The opening spell produced chances for both teams on which neither John Monterosso nor Daniel Trim could capitalise. Scott Bushby was unlucky not to put the Knights ahead after 10 minutes with a shot that Robert Monterosso cleared off the line.

With play evenly shared between the two sides, Cory Hugo held a shot from Stuart Montgomery, and John Monterosso fired just past the post after being sent clear by Rory Mouttet.

The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute via an Anthony McStea corner fell kindly to Brendan Knox (right) who lashed the ball in at close-range. It should have been two-nil shortly after when an error by Jonathon Mathers allowed in Tom Shepheard who disappointingly fired wide. The Knights pressed late in the half with Anthony Skorich shooting high in the visitors attempt to get back on level terms.

The second half began with the Knights seeking a goal and David Price’s shot was kept out by Hugo, then a cracking first time strike by Montgomery whistled narrowly wide. However, in the 62nd minute Swan struck a second goal when Mathers brought down Shepheard for a penalty, and while Dom Ando’s spot kick was saved by Tommi Tomich there was no stopping John Monterosso who quickly netted the rebound.

Skorich should have reduced the deficit not long after but fired high when well placed. Chances would become scarce for the visitors following this as Aaron Cole and Robert Monterosso tightened things up at the back for Swan. Montgomery got on the end of a superb Jon Higgins cross but Hugo proved up to the task with a tremendous save. The Knights frustration was compounded by the dismissal of Mathers with three minutes remaining.

09.08.08 - Nightmare first half for Swans in loss at Mandurah

Mandurah City 3 Swans 1

A horror first half saw the Swans concede three goals against Mandurah City, before losing 1-3 to Stuart Currie’s side in round 16 of the Football West Premier League clash at the Hyundai Stadium on Saturday.

The damage was done in the first half for the Dolphins with goals from man of the match Gary Attrill, Phil O’Callaghan and skipper Andy Brown. Swans consolation goal came from their top goal scorer Damian Scali, but Stuart Currie’s side move up to fifth on the table only three points from the top four.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln made one change from the side that beat ECU Joondalup last week, with David Perich having left the club being replaced by 18-year-old Trent Wood, who made his starting league debut for the Swans.

On a chilly day and with the wind howling the visitors opened brightly and Dom Ando’s cross to the back post on two minutes found Aaron Cole (right), his volley from five-yards was well saved by Mike Green.

With their first foray forward on five minutes City hit the front, a long ball from Brown seemed harmless but a back pass from defender David McNally fell short to keeper Daniel Agudelo, his attempted clearance hit Attrill and the rebound fell kindly to the midfielder who fired home into an empty net.

Mandurah went close to a second on 14 minutes, Ryan McDarby’s through ball sent Christian Paschkewitz clear but Agudelo was out quick to save.

The Swans had plenty of possession but lacked the final ball but they did go close on 18 minutes, Trent Wood found Justin Hugo on the right and his cross was headed just past the post by Scali.

With Brown inspirational in the middle of the park and Attrill causing problems down the left, Mandurah began to dominate and on 23 minutes Attrill cut inside McNally, but his shot was saved low by Agudelo.

Their domination was rewarded on 33 minutes with the second, Attrill again was involved he was found down the left by McDarby and he cut inside Hugo and squared it to the unmarked O’Callaghan on the penalty spot and he finished clinically past Agudelo.

It was nearly 3-0 two minutes later when Brown cut inside from the left; his powerful shot was saved by Agudelo at the second attempt. Swans needed a lift and they went close on 39 minutes, a great through ball from Brendan Knox sent Michael Tronchin in on goal but Green was out quick to save at the youngster’s feet.

With half time in sight City added a third, Swans debutant Trent Wood was caught in possession by Brown on 41 minutes and the influential midfielder strode forward and finished low past Agudelo.

With Paul Lincoln’s half time address still ringing in their ears the Swans opened brightly and went close on 49 minutes. Knox found Andy O’Neill on the left, he cut inside but his shot flashed just wide. They were in again five minutes later Tronchin’s long-range shot went just wide of the post.

Mandurah upped the tempo and from Ryan Townsend’s cross on the hour, Attrill’s low shot was saved by Agudelo. The Swans continued to press and Scali’s shot on the turn on 67 minutes was saved low by Green.

Their pressure paid off three minutes later when they reduced the margin. A free kick on the left by O’Neill was flicked on by McNally to Scali (left), the veteran striker headed over Green from 10-yards to make it 3-1.

Both sides had further chances, Brown produced another surging run from his own half on 80 minutes taking him past three Swans defenders, but his final shot was blocked by Agudelo. Swan’s O’Neill was causing problems down the left and his pinpoint cross on 82 minutes found Scali whose header was saved well by Green.

Swans coach Paul Lincoln said: “We started really well and it looked like being a good day for us, but we gave them all three goals by our own mistakes, and all were schoolboy errors”.

09.08.08 - Nightmare first half for Swans in loss at Mandurah

A horror first half saw the Swans concede three goals against Mandurah City, before losing 1-3 to Stuart Currie’s side in round 16 of the Football West Premier League clash at the Hyundai Stadium on Saturday.

The Swans began well with Aaron Cole going close in the second minute, but a mix up between defender David McNally and keeper Daniel Agudelo handed the first goal to Gary Attrill on five minutes. It got worse in the 33rd minute Dom Ando lost possession in the middle of the park and Attrill crossed to Phil O’Callaghan who fired home from eight-yards.

It was 3-0 just before half time, debutant Trent Wood was caught in possession by Andy Brown and the Mandurah skipper surged forward and scored low past Agudelo.

The Swans consolation goal came in the 70th minute, when Andy O’Neill’s free kick from the left was flicked on by McNally and Damian Scali (right) headed past Mike Green. (Full report later)

Mick De Ra’s under 23’s won 2-0 against Mandurah with Shane Webb and Connor Mahady on target, while Gary Mateljan’s under 18’s ran out 5-1 winners against Mandurah with Simon Williams and Dara McNally scoring two each and Callan Gibbons the other.

08.08.08 - Swans heads to Mandurah in round 16

Swans head South on Saturday with the long trip to the Hyundai Stadium to take on Mandurah City in round 16 of the Football West Premier League (3pm)

The black and whites are coming off a 2-1 win against ECU Joondalup last week and Coach Paul Lincoln was delighted with the sides fighting performance. “It was a good win for us, it continued on from a good second half last week. We've regained a few senior players which is very important for us and it made us a lot stronger and I thought we deserved the points." said Lincoln.

It’s the first league visit in the Premier League to Mandurah for the Swans, and Lincoln is looking forward to the game. “We go there pretty confidently after a good performance last week the players have worked hard this week and are looking forward to the game but we know it will be a tough game,” said Lincoln.

In team news the Swans are without David Perich who has headed off to America and Lincoln believes it will be a big loss for the club. “You can’t replace a bloke like David, who has come on leaps and bounds in the last two years. He has been great this season but we have to look ahead and it gives a young player an opportunity to step up and show me what he’s got for the rest of the season,” said Lincoln.

In team news Cory Hugo is under an injury cloud after re-injuring his ankle in last weeks wins and if he fails a late fitness test Daniel Agudelo (left) will come in to the starting line up. John Mansaray is struggling to overcome injury and is doubtful while Paul Baczynski is available again after suspension.

The Dolphins are coming off a 1-1 home draw against Western Knights last week, with Andy Brown equalising in the second half. They will be without the suspended Jeff Bright and Chris Wylie but with strikers Shane Crampton and Phil O’Callaghan in fine form the Swans will have to be on their toes on Saturday.

Last time we meet Mandurah City at Peelwood Parade

Mandurah City 1 Swan IC 3 – Soccer Pools Cup 2nd Round – 03.06.06

The last time we meet Mandurah City at Peelwood Parade was when the black and whites progressed to the next stage of the 2006 Soccer Pools Cup by defeating a focused first division outfit Mandurah City 3-1.

The early pressure came from the home side and just a few minutes in Graeme Matthews found Jake Loreto wide on the left but his cross into the area took a deflection off Dom Ando and was recovered by Cory Hugo. The bumpy surface pitch made life difficult for both teams, but as Swan settled they began to take control. A David Foster shot was cleared off the line by John Transfield, and then Damien Catalano's goalbound strike was superbly saved by Mike Green.

The visitor’s persistence paid off in the 28th minute when Miki Vujacic swung a free-kick into the area where Thomas Shepheard headed against the crossbar and Rory Mouttet (right) fired the rebound over the line.

Mandurah should have equalised five minutes from the break via Christian Paschkewitz who beat his marker only to lift the shot over the bar. As the half came to a close Mandurah gained the ascendancy and a rasping drive from Loreto clipped the bar.

The second half was all-action as a long-range effort by Ando was tipped wide by Green, then Matthews was disappointed to shoot wide from a Michael Bobridge centre. Both goalkeepers were called into action, Green smothering at the feet of Shepheard and Hugo blocking a powerful shot from Bobridge.

In the 61st minute Vujacic whipped in another free-kick which Brendan Knox tapped back to Shepheard (left) who made no mistake in doubling Swan's lead from close-range. Mandurah continued to plug away and Paschkewitz and Peter Knight both fired wide before Matthews reduced the deficit with a low shot past Hugo. Swan responded within the minute and substitute Scott Campbell played in Catalano whose long-range strike sneaked under Green to secure victory.

Swans youngster selected in the Australian Schoolboys shadow squad

Swan IC’s teenage striker Alex Cocking has been selected in the Australian Schoolboys shadow squad after a good performance in the School Sport Australia Football Championships being played in Port Macquarie, New South Wales.

After a stunning debut season for the black and whites in the Premier League, Cocking scored a sensational hat trick against Victoria on day two for WA but had to sit out a number of the games due to WA’s rotational policy.

WA finished a disappointing sixth in the tournament with only one win and four losses, but there was good news with Callum O’Connell selected in the Australian Schoolboys squad after the tournament.

04.08.08 - Swans youngster in WA Schoolboys side in NSW

Swan IC teenager Alex Cocking has travelled with the 2008 West Australian Schoolboys squad to Port Macquarie, New South Wales for the School Sport Australian Football Championships.

The 17-year-old has been a revelation at Francis Street this season and Coach Paul Lincoln hopes the youngster goes well in the tournament. “Alex’s a terrific kid and I wish him all the best over east. It’s unfortunate he has to miss a couple of games for us, but the chance to play for your state is a great honour and I’m sure he’ll do OK,” said Lincoln.

Head Coach Damon Atthowe has set the State Schoolboys the goal of returning home from the School Sport Australia Football Championships with a medal. The State side has enjoyed tremendous success during their four years under Atthowe who has no doubt Western Australia's young players are as good as any in the nation. "If we can stay injury-free, my minimum expectation is a bronze medal," explained Atthowe. "We've prepared well and will be employing a number of different approaches and tactics that we feel will enable us to do better than last year when we missed out on silver by a point."

Preparations for the championships, have been trying for all involved. "We've had a much interrupted preparation with a lot of players suffering injuries to the point where we've not had all sixteen boys together more than twice," explained Atthowe.

"Even as late as last Thursday we had Jason Mirco pull out due to injury but that's opened the door for Nima Raei to join the squad." The squad will be draw inspiration from Western Australia's strong recent record at the tournament which has produced two silver and one bronze medal since 2004.

It was disappointing start to the tournament when WA went down 0-1 to the ACT in their opening clash. They play NSW today in their second game. In other first round games NSW beat South Australia 3-1 and Queensland beat Victoria 2-0

The 2008 Western Australian Schoolboys squad features Pavle Biserko, Jordan Dunkley, Nick Feely, Devon Gibson, captain Ryan Pretorious (Cockburn City), Rhys Loxley, Kynon Melling (Forrestfield United), Andrew Dhiakiir, Nima Raei (Inglewood United), Paul Rechichi (E.C.U. Joondalup), Callum O'Connell, Wesley Padley, Todd Ross (Sorrento), Alex Cocking (Swan I.C.), Craig Thompson and Alan Galic (both with Western Knights). Travelling with the squad are Damon Atthowe (coach), Wayne Brooks (team manager), Peter Rickers (tour manager) and Andy Ross (trainer/physiotherapist).

03.08.08 - Perich leaves the Swans with a brace

In his farewell game for the Black and Whites David Perich’s double sealed victory for Swan IC against ECU Joondalup in Saturday’s round 15 Football West Premier League clash at Francis Street, the visitors ended the game with only eight men.

The 20-year-old midfielder couldn’t have scripted his last game any better, as he heads off to America next week to continue his studies after accepting a scholarship at the Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln made three changes to the side that lost at Perth last week with Cory Hugo, Damian Scali and David Perich returning, with Daniel Agudelo, Robert Monterosso and the suspended Paul Baczynski making way.

Both sides were coming off defeats last week, but it was the home side that had the first opportunity on four minutes, Michael Tronchin’s run and cross from the right found Brendan Knox, his shot was saved low by Bobson Karoma.

ECU settled and went close moments later; Garin Collins great ball sent Ian McMurray clear on the right hand side of the penalty area, his shot from the angle was turned around the post by keeper Cory Hugo.

It was end-to-end football as both sides worked hard on a heavy pitch, McMurray headed straight at Cory Hugo from a Collins corner, while at the other end on 16 minutes Tronchin’s shot on the turn from the edge of the box, crashed off the base of the post and Andy O’Neill’s follow up shot was blocked, with the Swans players appealing in vain for a penalty.

After escaping moments earlier ECU went within inches of taking the lead themselves on their next attack. Martin Ashworth was found down the right by Collins, his cross found Scott Bushby in the six-yard box but the midfielders flick went inches past the far post with Cory Hugo well beaten.

The game was up for grabs and Swan IC’s top scorer Damian Scali (right) almost added to his collection, but his header from five-yards flashed wide, while Tommy Jones almost capitalised on a mix up between Aaron Cole and keeper Cory Hugo, the striker’s lob was blocked by the keeper.

As the half ticked into the final minutes the Swans hit the front, Perich picked up the ball 25-yards from goal and his low shot flew past Karoma and into the net to give the Swans the lead at the break.

The home side had the opportunity to double their lead in the first minute of the second half, a back pass from Bushby was picked up by Karoma and referee Steven Gregory deemed it to be a back pass and awarded an indirect free kick four-yards from goal, Dom Ando’s shot was blocked on the line and eventually scrambled clear.

Karoma then came to the sides rescue on 50 minutes saving well from a Perich header after good work on the left by Geoff Mason, and the visitors should have levelled on 65 minutes when Collins was sent clear by Darren Broxton, but the striker blazed over from 10-yards.

The ECU keeper went from hero to villain in the 78th minute when he was sent off. A long ball from Perich sent Mason clear and his lob was handled outside the penalty area by Karoma and the former Sierra Leone national keeper was sent off by Gregory.

His replacement Chris McCrone was then beaten by the ensuing free kick from the edge of the box by Perich in the 80th minute to make it 2-0 to the home side.

It got worse for Chris Nicholson’s side when they lost Martin Ashworth three minutes later when he received a second yellow card, and four minutes later Scott Bushby suffered the same fate, leaving ECU down to eight men.

The Swans failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage, with McCrone saving well from Mason on 84 minutes. With victory in their sights the Swans went to sleep allowing second half substitute John Thornley to waltz through unchallenged but Cory Hugo was out bravely to save.

Mason was having one of them afternoon’s, first he was denied by a good save from McCrone, and in the 89th minute he was found by O’Neill’s cross, but from two-yards out he some how headed over.

In the final minute Collins’ corner from the left got the slightest of touches by McMurray for a consolation goal for ECU, and memories drifted back to last season when two late goals earned ECU a draw at Francis Street but this wasn’t the case this time and it ended with the Swans winning 2-1.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was happy to get back in the winners circle. “It was a good win for us today, it continued on from a good second half last week. We’ve regained a few senior players today which is very important for us and it made us a lot stronger and I thought we deserved the points,” said Lincoln.

On David Perich the coach was delighted the way he played in his final match. “It’s a credit to the lad; in his final game for the club he was outstanding. It leaves a big hole in our midfield but we wish him every success in America, and it gives an opportunity for some else to step up and fill the role for us,” added Lincoln.

01.08.08 - Swans back home against ECU in Round 15

After four weeks on the road the Swans are back on home soil when they entertain ECU Joondalup in round 15 of the Football West Premier League at Francis Street on Saturday (3pm)

It’s been a horror run on the road for Paul Lincoln’s side and he’s happy to be back at home this week. “Our last home game was on the 28 June so it’s nice to be back at home. Playing four games away from home in a row in July isn’t ideal and although we had the three home games in a row at the start of the season it was always going to be difficult for us.

”We have lost our past five matches which it’s really disappointing and recently suspensions have impacted the depth of our squad. We cannot afford to have players booked or sent off for silly things. I have spoken with the players about arguing with the referee’s decision and in my time in football at this level the referee has never changed his mind,” said Lincoln.

On Saturday’s game Lincoln is expecting a tough encounter. “This weekend we face ECU, who are coming off a 0-4 home loss to Mandurah so they will be looking to bounce back and we really need to take all three points to kick start our season again.

“We expect a tough physical game and we will be looking to start better than we did last time we met, when we were 3 – 0 down after 40 minutes. We’ve trained well and are looking forward to the game,” said Lincoln.

The Coach added: “Saturday is also the last game for David Perich before he departs to the USA. David on behalf of myself and the team we wish you all the best and we hope it all works out for you.”

In team news Damian Scali, Cory Hugo (left) are available after injury while Justin Hugo and Danyal Bennett are back from suspension, but Paul Baczynski begins a two match ban after being sent off last week at Perth.

ECU were humbled 0-4 at home last week and with the loss of Craig Simpson and the suspended Anthony Jones, it has left them a little light at the back, but Chris Nicholson will hope to get Martin Ashworth and Thomas Nicholson back from injury.

The games kicks off with the under 18’s at 11am, the 23’s at 1pm with the first team game at 3pm. Admission prices are $8 adults, $5 concessions and under 15’s are admitted free. Get along and support the black and whites!!!!!

Last time we met ECU at Francis Street

Swan IC 3 ECU Joondalup 3

The last time we hosted ECU Joondalup at Francis Street; two stoppage time goals enabled them to snatch a point in a 3-3 draw.

Quickest to settle was the home team who went ahead on seven minutes following great work down the right by David Perich whose cross was fired into the net by Damien Catalano (right). The margin was increased on the quarter hour when Anthony McStea crashed a free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box through the defensive wall and past a stranded Aleks Vrteski.

Joondalup’s search for a way back into the game was almost answered by Darren Quinncroft who shot into the side netting after being released by Mark Lee. Five minutes from the break Tom Shepheard (left) jinxed his way past three opponents before sending a low shot past Vrteski to take Swan’s lead to three goals.

The second half had been under way only minutes when Lee held his nerve to convert from the spot after Craig Young was brought down inside the box by Aaron Cole, who was duly red carded by referee Ton Klaver. Not surprisingly, the pendulum now swung in favour of Joondalup with Lee shooting wide from distance, Scott Blackmore and David Abel both headed high of the crossbar, and Tom Amphlett was thwarted by Cory Hugo.

As the game entered stoppage time Martin Ashworth put the visitors back in the hunt by netting at the back post after Lee’s cross wasn’t properly dealt with by the defence. The equaliser arrived two minutes later with Young netting in a goalmouth scramble to complete a remarkable comeback. However, there was still time for one final drama which saw Abel shown a red card by referee Klaver after confronting the official shortly after the final whistle.

Swans youngster back in the fold

Swan IC youngster Michael Tronchin shocked the clubs senior Coach Paul Lincoln and his team mates when he told them after the home game against Inglewood United that he had enough of football and was giving it away.

The 18-year-old, who had been a regular in the Swans starting line up, had lost the passion for the game and asked to take a rest from the game, a decision that was difficult for him.

“I’ve played the game for 12 consecutive years and I love football, but there was something missing which I can’t put my finger on. I spoke to my dad and thought a rest from the game would help me recharge the batteries and get a bit of the passion and heart back to play,” explained Tronchin.

“I started the season with a niggling injury, and never really overcame it, with that I was playing pretty poorly and quite lucky to keep my spot in the team. With my confidence low and an injury and not playing well at all, I didn't really want to be playing. So a few weeks off gave me the chance to be injury free and show I still had the passion to play just that I have to be mentally stronger,” added Tronchin.

His return to the club has seen him play well for the under 23’s and he made his return to the first team last week against Perth SC. “It’s always going to be a tough game against Perth and to have my first league game back against them was always going to be a challenge. I did find it quite tough; having Aaron Cole and Brendan Knox beside me helped me heaps. We then lost Bazza early, which made it a little harder, but these things happen in football.

“To be honest I don't think I played that well, I was pushing forward as a striker at times then coming back in the middle also so I was finding it a bit hard to adjust, and probably looked lost at times. But I thought my work rate was pretty good,” said Tronchin.

The Swans are at home to ECU Joondalup on Saturday, and its midfielder David Perich’s farewell, the youngster is heading to college in the USA. Tronchin believes it will leave a hole in the Swans midfield but he hopes he can find form and breach the hole. “David Perich is going to be a big loss for us in the middle of the park; if I get the chance to take his spot when he leaves I will definitely grab it with both hands.

“I've been playing in the middle for the last 4-5 years and done pretty well, so that will give me plenty of confidence if I do get the opportunity. But in saying that I will play where ever the coach puts me,” said Tronchin.

Swans Coach Lincoln was disappointed with his decision at the time but Tronchin believes the debut Coach has done a great job this season. “I believe Linc's has done really well so far in his first season as head coach. I think the mixture with the younger and older players is good, and the team spirit and culture has also been really good this year even though some results haven't gone our way.

“It showed in the first half of the season we were right up there, but with injuries and suspensions in the last few weeks it been hard to keep the same team out there. But I’m sure a win is just round the corner,” added Tronchin.

Let’s talk football back on the air

It was a successful return to the airways for Eamon Duffy and his ‘Let’s talk football’ team on Sunday evening, with the new show being broadcast on 107.3 Heritage FM. The WA local football fraternity have been frustrated with the lack of coverage in the local media and the show is an outlet for people to ring in and talk football.

On the first show Perth Glory Coach David Mitchell spoke candidly on his sides’ pre-season defeat against Melbourne Victory and the goings on at the A-League club. Also on the show was Ashley Morrison, the new Football West Communication and Marketing Manager who gave a great insight to the game in WA, and discussed recent issues and events within the governing body.

For presenter Duffy, he's been humbled by the support shown to the show by local Football clubs and their followers. "The amount of emails and calls I've received during our brief hiatus has been mind-blowing," said Duffy.

"We never expected the local Football community would back us in the way they've done, it is absolutely fantastic and I'm honoured our program is held in such high esteem by fans and administrators alike," he added.

The show has continued with its popular format and will run for two hours from 6pm each Sunday. It will be focusing on the happenings of the Football West Premier League and division one, and the Perth Glory. Duffy will be joined on a regular basis by Perth SC coach Graham Normanton and fellow presenter Scari Morales, while this week the hard working Stirling Lions President Don Evans joined in to give support to the show.

Evans said: “My personal thoughts are it is a pity that there was no comprehensive coverage of our league from the start of the year, especially with the evenness and amount of goals being scored making it an attractive product to promote. The biggest disappointment for me was the lack of unity in the media circles and the ego's that got in the way of a united media effort........maybe this is a meeting/forum FW need to call so everyone can get a slice of the media pie and get cracking to promote our game rather than bitching on personality issues.”

“Lets talk football is a show for all football people to get involved with and it is the Premier league that is the shopfront for our football followers and hopefully we can get new converts warming to the passion and beauty of our game through the air waves on a Sunday with Eamon and his team,” added Evans.

The show has been given funding by the Lions and ECU Joondalup and Duffy hopes more clubs will climb on board, as the show is only interested in raising the games profile. “As each club comes on board they will get the opportunity like ECU Joondalup’s President Syd Amphlett and Don did on Sunday to get their points across.
“They are putting their money where their mouths are, and we need more to cover the cost of the show in the future, as we are nowhere near that point yet,” explained Duffy.

Duffy hopes the show can grow and was happy with the return. “Being the first show, plus the fact they do not have a dump button, we did not invite callers on Sunday. The station policy at the moment is that they do not want normal talkback, however coaches and club officials are more than welcome to ring in, I will give the umber out next week, and Scari will be screening who goes to air.
” said Duffy.

One person who left a little disappointed with the show was Swan IC Coach Paul Lincoln (left), after comments from Normanton about his side after their 0-2 defeat at Dorrien Gardens on the Saturday. “It’s a shame a Coach of a fellow state league side can make detrimental comments regarding my club without me being able to have my say,” said Lincoln.

“This has been a concern of mine for a while, the show is great for football in the state, but Normanton has had his say regarding other clubs on the show and they haven’t had their right of reply.

“If he has a problem with the way my team played or the formation when we played them on Saturday, it was the same when we beat them 4-0 at Francis Street in round three. The only thing that was different was that we had five starters missing on Saturday and he doesn’t know how this affected us,” said a disappointed Lincoln.

Undermanned Swans go down to Perth

The Swans, who were without six first team regulars, went down 0-2 to Perth SC in Saturday’s round 14 Football West Premier League clash at Dorrien Gardens.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was forced into five changes to the starting line up from last weeks defeat at Floreat Athena, with Robert Monterosso, Andy O’Neill, Michael Tronchin, Justin Hugo and Paul Baczynski replacing the suspended David Perich, Alex Cocking and Danyal Bennett, while Damian Scali, Cory Hugo and John Mansaray were missing through injury.

It was a tight opening with chances at a minimum, and Perth lost striker Andreas Oliviera with a knee injury after a
